Students interested in auto maintenance got to put their skills to the test on Friday at Southern High School. The school played host to Kentucky's first-ever high school auto maintenance competition, the Toyota Express Maintenance Competition (TXM). The competition requires students to complete several tasks, like changing the oil of a car, rotating the tires, and regular maintenance, in a timed setting. Students also had to identify several unknown issues planted in the car. "Competitions drive a lot of kids and that's what we want them to get out of it," said Dusty Thornsbury, the Assistant Principal of the Auto Maintenance Academy at Southern High School. "We've been teaching and working and grinding all year, so this just adds another thing for them to look forward to."11 teams participated in the competition, including 2 teams from Southern High School, 2 teams from Fairdale High School, Grayson County, Barren County, Allen County, Grant County, Eastside Tech Center (Lexington), and the Paducha Innovation Hub.Sedeeq Nasruldeen is a senior at Southern in the auto maintenance academy. He said he already has a passion for cars, but adding the competition element makes it even more fun. "I like being challenged. I like going through things where I'm getting to go against other groups or teams," said Nasruldeen. Barren County won both 1st and 2nd place in the competition, while Fairdale placed 3rd.While there's not a prize for the winners this year, Thornsbury said they hope to change that by next year's competition. "Toyota in the past at other events have donated tool sets, cars, scholarships for kids, and that's what we see this growing into," said Thornsbury.Officials plan to host the next Toyota Express Maintenance Competition in the fall.
