Germany's IAA auto show to become hybrid virtual/real world event - Automotive News Europe

rest.indah.link

Organizers of Germany's top auto show, the IAA, plan to stage digital and real world activities as the event continues to struggle to attract foreign automakers amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

German automakers Volkswagen Group, BMW and Daimler will take part in the show, which takes place in Munich from Sept. 7 to Sept. 12.

Frankfurt was the IAA's host city for almost 70 years but the VDA has picked Munich for this year's event.

So far only a handful of non-German automakers, including Ford, Hyundai and Chinese brands, have said they will be present. Other major car companies including Toyota, Renault and Stellantis, which includes PSA Group and its Germany-based Opel brand as well as Fiat Chrysler, have not committed to being present.

This means that time is running out to make the show a truly international event with global appeal.

Organizers will place more emphasis on digital activities in case travel is still disrupted in September by measures to control the coronavirus.

"We are planning it as a hybrid event -- part digital, part physical with appropriate hygiene concepts,"  said Tobias Groeber, of Messe Muenchen, which operates Munich's trade fair grounds at Riem, where the show will be held.

Germany's auto association, the VDA, which organizes the show, believes a hybrid event could have advantages.

Virtual events will increase the show's reach and "make it more attractive for exhibitors and visitors," said the VDA's head of communications, Lutz Meyer. Automakers will have the opportunity to send marketing messages to their target groups via text, images and video on various digital channels, Meyer said.

Among confirmed attendees are Volvo's new Polestar EV brand, although Volvo itself will skip the event, and Chinese brands Nio, SAIC, Great Wall's Wey and Xpeng.

Suppliers Robert Bosch, Continental, Faurecia and ZF Friedrichshafen are also among companies taking part.

This year's IAA will broaden its focus beyond cars to cover forms of individual mobility, including so-called "holistic mobility" where all road users are networked.

The World Cycling Forum is a partner and several well-known bicycle manufacturers have confirmed their attendance.

Apple releases Chrome extension for iCloud passwords - The Verge

rest.indah.link

Apple has released an official extension for the Windows and Mac versions of Chrome that lets you use passwords stored in your iCloud Keychain. For anyone who uses Chrome as their browser and iCloud Keychain in lieu of a dedicated password manager, this could make bouncing between Windows and Mac computers much easier.

The release of the extension means that if you’ve used Safari to automatically generate strong passwords on other platforms, those can now be available to you in Chrome when you’re prompted for a login. Passwords created in Chrome for Windows will also sync back to iCloud so they’ll be available on Apple devices as well.

The extension is called iCloud Passwords and is available now in the Chrome Web Store. Details of the functionality were prematurely revealed last week in an update for the iCloud Windows 10 app, which listed “Support for iCloud Passwords Chrome Extension” as a new feature, despite the extension not having been released or otherwise announced.

Under Biden, era of weak auto regulation must end - Automotive News

rest.indah.link

Editor's note: This column was first published on commondreams.org on Jan. 23. It has been edited for publication.

The New York Times has rediscovered its auto safety news beat, which blossomed in the 1960s after my book, Unsafe at Any Speed, caused an uproar in Detroit. Reporter Christopher Jensen told readers of the Times about a new report by a coalition of six automotive safety groups demanding that the new Biden administration recharge the moribund, industry-dominated NHTSA with strong leadership, adequate budget and long-overdue, proven vehicle safety standards.

Since its creation by Congress in 1966, NHTSA has had some bright moments that made motor vehicles more crashworthy and operationally safer, with less pollution and more fuel efficiency.

Since then, more than 4 million lives have been saved and many more injuries prevented. Property damage was diminished and insurance premiums were lower than they would have been had the Wild West nonregulation, "style over safety" manias been allowed to continue. Laissez-faire runs amok.

In recent decades, however, under both Democratic and Republican administrations, NHTSA was degraded into more of a sporadic, meek consultant to the auto giants, instead of a strong law enforcement agency. Its administrators wafted sleepily in their few years at the helm and then retired to lucrative positions in the industry they failed to regulate.

To the extent that NHTSA did anything significant, it was the result of a small band of gritty citizen safety advocates such as Joan Claybrook, the prime author of the coalition's report, Clarence Ditlow of the Center for Auto Safety, and the insurance industry-funded Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety led until recently by Jackie Gillan and now Cathy Chase. These advocates used the tools of litigation and lobbying to protect all of us, receiving little recognition for their unsung and lifesaving endeavors.

Alas for the most part, at NHTSA, the routine was official inaction, not considered "news" by the mass media.

Standards not issued nor strengthened, recalls not ordered, penalties not applied, data not compiled by make and model, safety research vehicles not funded and chronic secrecy by the auto companies and government not qualifying as newsworthy. A few high-profile auto defect scandals, often exposed when manufacturers were sued by tort lawyers, were widely reported, but the news coverage rarely included NHTSA's inaction and institutional abandonment by Congress and the White House.

The revival of the federal government's motor vehicle safety/pollution/fuel efficiency missions must start with congressional hearings for updated, stronger laws, including criminal penalties for refusal by auto companies to recall defective or noncompliant vehicles; legislatively mandated safety advances; and more capacity and funding for NHTSA's tiny budget, now far less than what is spent on military bands!

With distracted driving and ever more vehicles on more crowded highways, fatalities (including pedestrian casualties) started to increase pre-COVID-19.

The media, on its part, should not be distracted by the hype around a premature autonomous vehicle and super smart highways. Every day, people are dying in the old-fashioned ways that could be prevented by long-ready, better-handling and crash-protective vehicles.

Imagine the benefits of safer vehicles with far more environmentally benign engines and adequate funding for cost-effective public investment in new forms of public transit and upgrading existing mass transit. Getting around on the ground should include many diverse forms of arriving at one's destination in a timely, safe and environmentally preferable manner.

The Claybrook report, "Safer Vehicles and Highways: 4.2 Million U.S. Lives Spared Since 1966," is very specific about what needs to be done. New technical talent is needed at NHTSA in this era of electric cars, autonomous safety assists and the computerization of motor vehicles vulnerable to hacking.

A tougher position on recalls is essential. "Automakers continue efforts to minimize expensive recall costs by delaying the recall, narrowing the scope of a recall, or denying the defect," declares the report.

Moreover, many of the safety features and performance levels in your vehicle have not been updated for years in practical, cost-effective ways long urged by the more innovative automotive suppliers. These include child safety safeguards.

It is time for the Biden people, under the new secretary of transportation, Pete Buttigieg, to catch up and end the soporific record of their predecessors, including that of those from the Obama administration.

The French have a saying, "The more things change the more they remain the same." That applies to the auto company executive-suite culture. In their comfortable atriums, they arrange for deniability while they press for immunity from criminal and tort laws. They still preside over obscure financing and advertising deceptions. They still dangle before buyers of their less expensive vehicles, overpriced options for long-amortized safety improvements that are standard equipment on higher-priced vehicles so as to pressure them to upgrade.

They still instruct their lobbyists to go to Congress with one message — "No, no, no" — to long-delayed improvements for motorists to reduce the casualty toll on the highway and the various economic costs associated with such stagnant corporate stubbornness.

President Joe Biden promises a new day from Trumpism. Let's see if he and his team can provide America with a New Day of Public Safety from callous corporatism on the nation's roadways.

New renders depict the Galaxy Z Fold3 as a bendable S21 Ultra - Notebookcheck.net

rest.indah.link
The Galaxy Z Fold3 might look like this. (Source: Twitter)
The Galaxy Z Fold3 might look like this. (Source: Twitter)
The next generation of Samsung's flexible premium phablet is likely to be called the Galaxy Z Fold3. The leaker Ben Geskin has produced new images to show how this device might look according to the latest leaks and rumors. They point to it having rear cameras like those of the Galaxy S21 Ultra, although the rest is much unchanged compared to 2020.

Samsung is currently rumored to expand its foldable offerings in 2021, as it would reportedly like to stay ahead in this field rather than be overtaken by rumored new entries from other companies that might range from Xiaomi to Apple. They may take on new versions of the Galaxy Z Fold series, which, according to Ben Geskin, will take on their maker's latest premium design language.

This involves an enlarged, frame-hugging camera hump quite like that found on the new S21 Ultra candy-bar flagship. It suggests Geskin thinks (or may have heard) the Galaxy Z Fold3 will get the same elaborate imaging system, 108MP main shooter, laser autofocus and all.

The new image mirrors earlier indications that Samsung's other type of foldable, the Galaxy Z Flip, will upgrade to vanilla S21 cameras in its own new iteration. Otherwise, the "new Z Fold" may look more or less like its predecessor, with a secondary screen that dominates one whole "leaf" of the rear panel and a main folding display of at least 7.6 inches in diagonal length.

One or both of these panels are rumored to have Samsung's first under-display selfie cameras (or UDCs) instead of central punch-holes, which may be why Geskin's new render includes no hint of front-facing shooters. Finally, the leaker refers to this concept as the "Galaxy Z Fold 3 Ultra", which hints at a new (and probably especially expensive) tier for this line of foldables in 2021.

There is little other evidence that Samsung really plans to augment the Z Fold line in this way in 2021. On the other hand, it might also release up to 4 new foldables this year, some of which are said to be "more affordable". However, they might now wind up being cheaper only when compared to this putative Z Fold3 Ultra.

The Galaxy Z Fold2 is now on Newegg

The new hypothetical top-end phone could also be the only one with S Pen support, as Geskin has popped one into his latest image. Then again, he also predicts there will be no Galaxy Note-esque silo in the foldable, and that the stylus might just clip onto it as it does in the Galaxy Tab S7/S7+. Then again, there is no sign of any kind of corresponding magnetic attachment strip in the image.

A Top 5G Stock to Watch This Earnings Season - The Motley Fool

rest.indah.link

The 5G smartphone market is about to blow up in 2021. Apple supplier Murata estimates that sales of 5G smartphones could exceed 500 million units in the new year compared to 300 million units in 2020. Market research firm Strategy Analytics has a more aggressive forecast -- predicting a 150% jump in 5G smartphone sales this year from 2020's estimated shipments of 250 million units.

Qorvo (NASDAQ:QRVO) offers one path for investors to take advantage of this huge jump in 5G smartphone sales. The chipmaker supplies radio-frequency chips to several major smartphone OEMs (original equipment manufacturers). Not surprisingly, Qorvo's revenue and earnings have accelerated big time lately -- a trend that's likely to continue when the chipmaker releases its fiscal 2021 third-quarter results on Feb. 3. Here's what to expect.

Qorvo is about to deliver big gains once again

Analysts expect Qorvo to deliver non-GAAP earnings of $2.66 per share on revenue of $1.06 billion for the December quarter. These estimates are in line with management's guidance and well ahead of the year-ago period's $1.86 in earnings per share and $869 million of revenue.

But don't be surprised to see the company blast past its own expectations. That's because Apple, which reportedly accounts for a third of Qorvo's sales, has potentially scaled its iPhone production in the final calendar quarter of 2020. Supply chain checks carried out by Wedbush Securities analyst Daniel Ives suggest Apple could have built close to 90 million iPhones in the fourth quarter, up from his original estimate of 65 million to 70 million units from Sept. 2020.

Such an impressive jump in iPhone production through the quarter doesn't seem surprising as demand for the iPhone 12 is very strong. After all, it didn't take much time for the device to become the best-selling 5G smartphone globally, so Apple alone could give Qorvo a nice lift and help it outperform Wall Street estimates when the company releases its results this week.

The party is just getting started

Analysts believe Qorvo will be able to sustain its high growth rate with the top line growing 19% year over year in the fiscal fourth quarter, while earnings increase 27% to $2.00 per share.

However, there's a strong possibility of Qorvo exceeding those estimates. Cowen analysts estimate Apple could ramp up its March quarter iPhone builds to 55 million units, up 49% year over year. Wedbush has an even more aggressive forecast, estimating iPhone builds between 60 million and 70 million units in the current quarter. What's more, the momentum is expected to spill over into the second quarter of the calendar year as well with Apple expected to make at least 40 million iPhone units.

All of this bodes well for Qorvo given its close relationship with the tech giant. However, the chipmaker is sitting on additional growth drivers such as Samsung's recently launched Galaxy S21 flagship. Qorvo has been a longtime supplier of RF chips to Samsung's Galaxy line of smartphones, including Galaxy S20 devices last year, and it's likely to have retained its spot in the new release.

That's because Samsung's Galaxy S21 Ultra comes equipped with WiFi 6E connectivity, and Qorvo had indicated on its last earnings call that it's "actively supporting leading OEMs in the design of 6E platforms." Counterpoint Research estimates Galaxy S21 shipments could surpass those of the Galaxy S20 by the middle of this year. That wouldn't be surprising as Samsung has slashed the base prices of the Galaxy S21 models by $200 compared to the previous S20 lineup.

Qorvo can ride the success of its mobile customers and maintain its impressive growth rate. More importantly, investors shouldn't forget the 5G smartphone market still has a lot of growth to offer as shipments may hit 1.5 billion units by 2025. In this environment, Qorvo can remain a top 5G play long term, and a strong showing in the upcoming earnings report should give investors the right push to buy the stock.

Warren Henry Auto Group uses bonus plan to retain techs, partners with schools on training - Automotive News

rest.indah.link

In late 2019, Warren Henry Auto Group opened an 800,0000-square-foot service center in North Miami for its Infiniti and Jaguar-Land Rover stores. The expansion nearly tripled the number of service bays from 28 to 82.

To help find technicians to staff up for the additional capacity, Warren Henry Auto Group launched two different initiatives — part of an ongoing effort by the seven-store group to recruit skilled talent.

In January 2020, Warren Henry instituted a deferred-compensation plan that pays service techs a bonus based on hours billed and seniority with the company. Employees become fully vested in the program after three years of service.

The group also partnered with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to host an ASE certification program to train candidates.

The tenure-based bonus program so far has helped Warren Henry nearly double the number of technicians at its North Miami location to 70 employees.

"The technicians who have been with us for a good period of time are appreciative," CEO Warren Henry Zinn told Automotive News. "They've also put a bug in the ear of friends who are working in other facilities."

During the pandemic last year, the group made an effort to demonstrate its loyalty. The company has not reduced its technician work force and has guaranteed techs 40 hours of pay a week.

"For several months, we didn't know what was going to happen from one day to the next," Zinn said. "We didn't know what kind of shutdowns we were going to experience."

Zinn played the long game with his hard-to-source talent pool.

"We know a lot of different groups that laid off large numbers of technicians," Zinn said. "From our perspective, it seems pretty difficult to understand why you would lay off revenue-producing individuals at a store."

A chronic shortage of service technicians is an intractable problem that bedevils the auto retail industry.

At the end of 2019, franchised new-vehicle dealers and body shops had a total of 267,087 technicians, according to the National Automobile Dealers Association. About 39,000 new service techs graduate from U.S. technical colleges and training programs each year to help fill those ranks, NADA said. But the industry needs 76,000 new techs annually to meet new demand and replace personnel lost to attrition, the association said.

Warren Henry Auto Group CFO Erik Day said dealership margin compression has put more pressure on fixed operations to produce profitability.

"To get that work through the shop, you have to have technicians that are productive and proficient," Day said.

Following the North Miami service expansion, Zinn and his team had to get creative with finding ways to ramp up tech recruitment.

The idea of the bonus program came from the financial services company UBS, which manages the dealer group's 401(k) and other compensation programs.

"That's when the lightbulb went off about maybe creating something to support technicians as a way to help us with recruitment and retention," Day said. "It's an additional layer of compensation beyond just the normal comp that technicians typically earn."

The bonus program cost Warren Henry about $60,000 last year.

"The return on investment is certainly there when you look at the dollar spend versus the incremental volume you're getting," Day said. "We've seen substantial growth in our service revenue and gross profit year over year. "

At the same time, to prime the pump for future techs, Warren Henry Auto partnered with Miami-Dade County schools for the retailer to host a two-year certification program on-site.

The group provides classroom space, service bays and equipment for hands-on training, and technician mentoring, while the school system provides the instructor and computer equipment.

"Our goal is working with the instructor to identify students who have demonstrated sufficient competencies," Day said. "We can then introduce them on a part-time basis to do some work at the dealership so they can gain even more experience outside of the classroom environment," Day said.

Zinn is hopeful he'll be able to hire 75 to 80 percent of the graduating class.

"Certainly we're looking to keep the best," he said.

Will your iPhone get iOS 15? This is what we know so far - TechRadar

rest.indah.link

The next big update coming to iPhones around the world will almost certainly be called iOS 15, and we expect to hear all about it at the company's WWDC 2021 conference expected to take place in June this year.

Little is known about iOS 15, but a number of rumors have given us a suggestion of whether your iPhone will be able to download the latest software when it lands - and it differs to iOS 14 compatibility.

Every phone that was capable of downloading iOS 13 was also compatible with the latest iOS 14 software that landed in 2020 before the iPhone 12 series was unveiled. iOS 14.4 is the latest upgrade, and that was made available before the end of January 2021.

But what's the latest we know about iOS 15? We've taken a look at the biggest rumors so far to give you our best knowledge on whether your phone will be upgraded.

iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus and iPhone SE (2016)

iPhone 6S

If you own the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus or original iPhone SE, you're unlikely to be able to upgrade to iOS 15. That's the harsh truth, and while it isn't yet confirmed we've heard this from at least two sources now.

The iOS 14 upgrade was available on these three devices, but that in itself wasn't expected as many had anticipated Apple would drop support for those devices in its 2020 upgrade.

While this isn't confirmed, it would make sense for Apple to drop support for these older devices as they'll all be over five years old by the time iOS 15 lands and some are even older than that.

The switch to iOS 15 won't mean your phone is useless, but if you're looking for the latest features and security updates you'll want to switch to a more modern smartphone from Apple or an alternative.

iPad Air 2, iPad (2017) and iPad mini 4

iPad mini 4

The iPad mini 4 (Image credit: TechRadar)

It's also likely these three iPad models won't be able to download iOS 15, or more accurately the company's offshoot software that's likely to be called iPadOS 15, when it lands.

We've yet to hear this specifically from any key sources, but it would make sense for the company to drop the next-gen of its devices from the iOS 15 update so keep an eye out when the iOS 15 details land.

iPhone 7 and beyond

Own an iPhone 7 or a smartphone from Apple released after 2017? It's likely you'll still be supported by iOS 15. There's no gurantee of that at the moment, and we'll have to wait for official confirmation from Apple before we know that for certain.

All of the leaks so far have suggested iOS 15 will be coming to all devices that are older than the iPhone 7 series though so we're inclined to agree with those sources and hopefully it'll be positive news for you.

Lawsuit accuses Valve of abusing Steam market power to prevent price competition - Eurogamer.net

rest.indah.link

A new lawsuit has accused Valve of abusing Steam's market power to prevent price competition.

The Hollywood Reporter said that five gamers filed an antitrust class action in California that alleges Valve requires developers and publishers enter into a "Most Favoured Nation" clause.

Eurogamer Next-Gen News Cast - Should Sony issue refunds for Control on PS5?

A Most Favoured Nation clause is a retail parity clause in which a supplier agrees to treat a particular customer no worse than all other customers. MFNs are under increased scrutiny from authorities across the world, including the European Commission.

The lawsuit alleges a developer or publisher must agree the price of a PC game on Steam will be the same price as on other PC platforms. Essentially, the lawsuit claims Steam does not allow developers to price their games lower on other platforms.

The suit, submitted by American law firm Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP, says Valve's MFN clause keeps prices of PC games high on other platforms, such as the Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Store.

"The Steam MFN also hinders innovation by creating an artificial barrier to entry for platforms," reads the complaint.

"When a market, such as this one, is highly concentrated, a new entrant can benefit consumers by undercutting the incumbent's prices. The ability to provide PC games to consumers at lower prices is one way a firm or new entrant could gain market share. If this market functioned properly - that is, if the Steam MFN did not exist and platforms were able to compete on price - platforms competing with Steam would be able to provide the same (or higher) margins to game developers while simultaneously providing lower prices to consumers."

The lawsuit uses tweets from Epic boss Tim Sweeney to back up its case. In a January 2019 tweet, Sweeney said Steam "has veto power over prices".

This content is hosted on an external platform, which will only display it if you accept targeting cookies. Please enable cookies to view.

Then, in a February tweet, Sweeney added:

"If the dominant store has a price parity clause, and takes a much higher revenue share than competitors, then the only way for creators to pass savings on to gamers is by avoiding the dominant store.

"That's what this is ultimately about!"

Curiously, the lawsuit includes a raft of publishers as co-defendants: CD Projekt, Ubisoft, kChamp Games (the one-man indie developer behind ShellShock Live), Rust, LLC (the Los Angeles developer behind Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades), and Devolver Digital. The lawsuit alleges these companies agreed to the Steam MFN.

But why include only these publishers and developers and not the many others who release games on Steam? Why single out two indie developers in this case?

The suit alleges that if Steam MFN did not exist and platforms were able to compete on price, then platforms competing with Steam would be able to provide the same (or higher) margins to game developers while simultaneously providing lower prices to consumers. But does this play out in reality?

Ubisoft ditched Steam a while back to launch its PC games on the Epic Games Store. On Epic's platform, Assassin's Creed Valhalla costs £49.99. That's the same price as Assassin's Creed Odyssey costs on Steam. Despite the increased revenue share afforded to publishers and developers on the Epic Games Store and the fact Assassin's Creed Valhalla is not on Steam, it doesn't look like any saving has been passed on to customers.

And what about this Steam MVN upon which the lawsuit is based? According to the pricing section of Steamworks' documentation, developers and publishers are responsible for setting and managing pricing for their products. However, the blurb confirms Valve will review initial pricing and proposed pricing adjustments (sales).

"Initial pricing as well as proposed pricing adjustments will be reviewed by Valve and are usually processed within one or two business days," reads the documentation.

"We recommend pricing strategies based on our experience and we may suggest prices based on currency conversions and other factors."

1
Steam's pricing rules, according to public documentation.

Does this amount to an MVN clause? Tim Sweeney seems to think so. In a February 2019 tweet, the Epic boss said the "reviewed by Valve" line "shows developers don't have autonomy to set prices for games".

There is a clearer stipulation in the Steam keys section of the Steamworks documentation that reveals Valve expects price parity on Steam keys, specifically:

"Please note that Steam keys cannot be sold on other sites unless the product is also available for purchase on Steam at no higher a price than is offered on any other service or website."

What's going on here, then? Back in February 2019, Epic's Tim Sweeney tweeted to suggest private agreements between Steam and developers is not usually known.

"The situation with price parity expectations on Steam is not transparent," Sweeney said. "Valve's public docs say temporary sales elsewhere are fine but they expect overall price parity on Steam keys. What each private Steam agreement with developers require is not generally know."

Then, later from Sweeney on Twitter:

"We have been told by multiple developers that Valve has approval over price and that long-term price parity (excluding temporary sales) is expected. We are researching further. Because these agreements are private, any Valve clarification would be helpful."

Valve is yet to comment on the lawsuit. Devolver has shrugged it off.

The lawsuit wants a ruling that Steam's supposed MFN clause "is anticompetitive and constitutes illegal monopolisation and monopoly maintenance", an injunction, damages and legal costs.

Chaos Erupts Over Sony PlayStation 5 Sale in Tokyo - HYPEBEAST

rest.indah.link

With the supply of the Sony PlayStation 5 still quite scarce all over the world, gamers in Tokyo jumped at a recent chance to get their hands on the next-gen console.

Earlier this week, Akihabara’s Yodobashi Camera, received a major shipment of PS5s that caused chaos to break out when released. Standing as one of the largest electronics stores in Japan, the sale saw an estimated 300 first come, first served ticket entries for a chance to purchase a PS5. With many people also joining the madness as the Akihabara location of Yodobashi Camera does not require customers to hold its black credit card to purchase the console, a requirement created to prohibit resellers.

The crowd that packed into the location began to push and shove forcing checkout counters and staff to be forced back. Ultimately, the local police were called and canceled the sale due to the aggressive nature that broke out amidst the state of emergency over the Coronavirus issued by the Japanese government.

Catch all the chaos over the Sony PlayStation 5 below.

In case you missed it, Death Note manga’s first new volume in 14 years is now set to release.

Chrome Beta 89 updates Discover feed, enables web sharing on the desktop, and much more (APK Download) - Android Police

rest.indah.link

Chrome 88 was released only last week, marking the release of the Manifest V3 extension API, changes to password management, and the official death of Adobe Flash support. Chrome 89 has now arrived in the Beta Channel, and it seems to be an even bigger release — even if many of its changes are hidden to most people. Let's dive in!

Privacy Sandbox

Google first announced Privacy Sandbox all the way back in 2019, as the company's planned replacement for third-party browser cookies. It's still very much a work in progress, but Google aims for it to be "a secure environment for personalization that also protects user privacy." Chrome 89 has the first pieces of the personalization interface, currently hidden behind a new flag: #privacy-sandbox-settings.

With the flag enabled, a new page for Privacy Sandbox can be found in Settings > Privacy and security > Privacy sandbox. There's currently a single toggle, which enables 'Web crowd and ad measurement.' Google explained how this works in a recent blog post:

Federated Learning of Cohorts (FLoC) [Privacy Sandbox] proposes a new way for businesses to reach people with relevant content and ads by clustering large groups of people with similar interests. This approach effectively hides individuals “in the crowd” and uses on-device processing to keep a person’s web history private on the browser.

By creating simulations based on the principles defined in Chrome’s FLoC proposal, Google’s ads teams have tested this privacy-first alternative to third-party cookies. Results indicate that when it comes to generating interest-based audiences, FLoC can provide an effective replacement signal for third-party cookies.

Google isn't allowing sites to use Privacy Sandbox yet, but now we know where you'll be able to manage its settings once the feature is finished.

Discover feed

Chrome 89 has a few changes to the Discover feed on the New Tab Page. Currently, articles in the Discover section are listed in cards, but in Chrome 89 they are only separated by dividers. The title font also seems to be slightly bigger, and perhaps most importantly, the description preview has been removed.

Chrome 88 (left) vs. Chrome 89 (right)

It's interesting to see Google experiment with removing the teaser text. In most cases, they're too short to provide any helpful context or added information, and removing them potentially allows more articles to appear on-screen at once.

Google is testing a new interface for the site info popup on Android, which appears when you press the 'I' or lock icon in the address bar. The popup normally shows the full address, information about page security, and a list of granted permissions. Chrome 89 includes a new flag (#page-info-discoverability) that updates the popup's design.

Left: Old UI; Center, Right: New UI

The new popup fits in better with Google's updated design language, and you can revoke permissions without opening Chrome's normal settings panel.

Web NFC API

Google first began testing NFC in web apps with the release of Chrome 81. That version added initial support for the Web NFC API, allowing sites to read and write NFC tags. It's mainly intended for inventory management, conferences, museum exhibits, and anywhere else NFC is frequently used. Starting with Chrome 89, the Web NFC API is enabled by default on Android.

Web NFC demo from Chrome Dev Summit 2019

The Web NFC API is limited to reading and writing NDEF data, so low-level operations like ISO-DEP, NFC-A/B, NFC-F are not supported. Peer-to-peer communication mode and Host-based Card Emulation (HCE) also won't work. Unfortunately, that probably rules out any chances of someone creating an Amiibo creator web app.

Like with microphones, cameras, and other hardware features, NFC requires granting a permission from a popup. It will be interesting to see how the API will be used in the coming years.

Web Sharing on desktop

Chrome on Android has supported the Web Share and Web Share Target APIs for a while now, which allows web apps to send and receive data with Android's native share menu. The features have gone a long way to blur the lines between native and web apps on Android, but annoyingly, they haven't been available on desktop platforms (except with Safari on macOS)... until now.

Web sharing on Chrome OS 89

With the release of Chrome 89, web sharing (where web apps can open the system share dialog) is now available on Windows and Chrome OS, and web apps can function as a target on Chrome OS. Developers won't have to add any extra code for the functionality to work on desktop platforms.

Other changes

As always, this update includes changes for both users and developers. Here are some smaller changes included in Chrome 89:

  • Chrome added support for text fragment links in 2019, which are links that automatically scroll to a certain string of text. Google Search started using them in 2020, and now websites can change how the highlighted portions look like with the new CSS ::target-text pseudo-element.
  • Chrome 89 can load AVIF content natively using AV1 decoders on Android and WebView.
  • The CSS property 'list-style-type' supports two new keywords: 'disclosure-open' and 'disclosure-closed'.
  • The default value of CSS 'display' property for <summary> has been changed from 'block' to 'list-item'.
  • Chrome now supports the CSS property 'overflow:clip,' which allows web pages to turn off any type of scrolling for a box. It uses less RAM than 'overflow: hidden,' which is often used for the same purpose.
  • Google has added a new cross-origin reporting API for sites to track usage across different web domains.
  • Sites can now detect if the current device is set to high contrast display mode, using the new forced-colors CSS media query (similar to how detection for dark mode works).
  • Some legacy prefixed events (webkitprerenderstart, webkitprerenderstop, webkitprerenderload, and webkitprerenderdomcontentloaded) have been removed.
  • Chrome now supports the 'await' keyword at the top level in JavaScript modules.
  • The chrome://media-internals page will be removed in Chrome 91, and Chrome 89 includes a new flag (#enable-media-internals) that toggles access to the page.
  • The new flag #enable-table-ng is available in Chrome 89, which enables the new Blink table layout engine, TableNG.
  • There's a new flag for enabling "a rich bottom sheet" for installing Progressive Web Apps on Android, #mobile-pwa-install-use-bottom-sheet, but it doesn't appear to do anything yet.
  • When you enter a website in the Chrome address bar, it currently adds "http://" to the front by default. Chrome 89 has a new flag (#omnibox-default-typed-navigations-to-https) that changes this behavior, and if the website doesn't appear to support HTTPS, Chrome will fall back to the HTTP URL.
  • Chrome 89 has initial support for XFA forms in the PDF reader.
  • A new flag, #read-later-reminder-notification, adds a popup when an article in your reading list has been unread for a week.
  • The Web Serial API, which allows web apps to communicate with hardware over serial connections, is now enabled by default on Windows and Chrome OS. It was previously only enabled by default on Android.
  • The WebHID API allows sites to more easily use gamepads and other interface devices, and it's enabled by default with Chrome 89.

Download

The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take days, download and install it just like any other APK.

Apple MacBook Pro (M1): Initial iPhone and iPad App Compatibility - Thurrott.com - Thurrott.com

rest.indah.link

One of the key benefits of Apple moving the Mac to its M1 chipset is that users will be able to run iPhone and iPad apps natively. But this was one of the areas I never got to with my Mac Mini (M1) articles. So let’s take a look at how this compatibility works now, with the understanding that this is a moving target and that things should improve steadily going forward.

This kind of iPhone and iPad app compatibility relies on the M1 chip: Macs running on Intel hardware can only run apps that were converted for the Mac through Catalyst. But finding compatible iPhone and iPad apps is the first challenge. A quick Google search provided the obvious answer: These apps are available in the Mac App Store, which makes perfect sense. From what I can see, Apple doesn’t call out iPhone and iPad apps in the Store, or provide a special area where you can find these apps. Instead, there are two key methods for installing iPhone and iPad apps.

The first is to use search. For example, if you search for Microsoft Office in the Mac App Store, you’ll get a Mac Apps result page by default. But you can select the “iPhone & iPads Apps” link instead to see the available mobile apps.

Those particular results are … disappointing. The Mac Apps results include Microsoft 365, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and so on, as one might expect. But the iPhone and iPad apps results only show third-party apps and utilities. Searches for terms like “Microsoft Word” work similarly.

So why is this? It’s because the Mac App Store doesn’t simply surface every single iPhone and iPad app for Mac users. Instead, developers must choose to include their mobile apps in the Mac App Store. And Microsoft, which already makes full-featured desktop apps for Mac, has elected not to.

The second method for finding iPhone and iPad apps in the Mac App Store is to view the list of apps (and games) you previously downloaded on an i-Device. These are available via your profile picture in the bottom left of the Mac App Store: Click that to display the Account page, which shows your previously downloaded Mac apps in reverse chronological order. And then click the “iPhone & iPad Apps” link to show those apps.

As with the search-based example above, this list will be filtered so that it only displays the apps you downloaded that support being in the Mac App Store. I don’t know when I downloaded Microsoft Office for the iPhone, for example, but it doesn’t matter. It’s not there in the list. (Also, some kind of toggle that would let one display these apps alphabetically or by category would be nice.)

If you look carefully at the apps that do appear, you’ll see that some are denoted with “Designed for iPad” (or iPhone) text. These apps are known to work on the Mac as well. Some apps have a note like “Designed for iPhone. Not verified for macOS,” and these … well, these haven’t really been tested, so who knows how well they will work? I assume this simply means that the developer OK’d the app’s inclusion in the Mac App Store (and hope that this indicates some level of trust in its compatibility and performance.)

To test how these apps work, I selected a few iPhone and iPad apps that I had previously downloaded. HBO Max, for example, is designed for iPad and so should work well. It starts up quickly enough and seems to run fine, and like other iPad apps, it appears in an iPad-shaped window that only occupies roughly 50 percent of the screen by default.

There’s no way to resize it per se, but you can at least maximize it, which makes it full screen, and in this mode, there are back empty areas on the left and right of the app display because iPads have 4:3 displays and Macs have wider 16:10 displays.

After the initial excitement of seeing an iPad app running on the Mac wore off, some harsh realities emerged. Using HBO Max to play the movie Die Hard, I can see that this wide aspect ratio movie now has black empty areas both on the top and bottom of the movie display, which is normal, and on the right and left, too: Again, the app is oriented for a 4:3 display, so you can’t play the movie in a real full-screen mode.

(Red area indicates where the movie playback is occurring as you can’t take a screenshot of that)

As bad, typical keyboard commands—like tapping the Space bar for Play/Pause—don’t work. Instead, you have to use the mouse to emulate finger taps on the screen. So you can click the middle of the display to show the controls, and then click the Play button to pause playback. It’s a bit tedious. (Tapping the Esc key while in full-screen mode does revert the app to windowed mode, which is nice.)

This is, of course, app-specific. It’s possible for a developer to tailor an iPhone or iPad app so that it works better on a Mac. HBO has not done that for HBO Max, and my guess is that they won’t because they already have a full-featured web app that works great on the Mac. But that’s up to them.

The iPhone game Doodle Jump is another cautionary tale: This game is now several years old—apparently, I first installed it on August 2, 2009—but it is listed as being “Designed for iPhone,” so it should work. If so, I never figured it out: Doodle Jump appears in a tiny iPhone-sized window, and it also cannot be resized.

That said, the full-screen experience is pretty good, and similar to what you see when you run an iPhone app zoomed on an iPad.

But actually playing Doodle Jump was beyond my skills. You can tap on buttons like Play and Multiplayer to get things going, but once you’re in a game, it’s not clear how you control the little on-screen sprite. On a phone, you can tilt the device left and right to move, and you can touch the screen to shoot. On a Mac, there’s no to tilt the thing that I can figure out, though clicking when the mouse cursor is over the game does shoot.

Are these two apps great examples of … anything? Maybe not. But when I think about the types of mobile apps I could see using on a desktop system like the Mac, it’s a pretty short list. And Apple makes it tedious to even find what’s out there. I did a few searches for mobile apps I could imagine wanting to use, like Spotify, Fitbit, and Instagram, but none are currently available on the Mac. There are no Google apps there. No Microsoft apps. Etc.

Given that, this is a topic I’ll revisit in the future. For now, I’ll just say that the performance seems excellent and that compatibility is the primary problem. Not just via availability, but in that some of the apps that are available don’t really work all that elegantly. But I expect that to change.
