‘They wanted a scapegoat’: Americans split on who’s accountable for auto thefts, criminals or car makers - Fox News

rest.indah.link

Car thefts in Washington, D.C., and Chicago are soaring, leading the Windy City's mayor to accuse two auto manufacturers of having insufficient anti-theft systems, but Americans who spoke to Fox News said criminals should also be prosecuted.

"Definitely go after the criminals. I mean, the criminals are doing the crime," Bud, a Virginia resident, said. The Chicago mayor's office wants "to push things off and not take the blame for themselves, for their crappy politics and policies."

"It's kind of just like they want to go after the gun manufacturers for shootings," he continued. "It's just because they wanted a scapegoat."

Crystal, a D.C. resident, disagreed: "I think the car manufacturers can make the cars a little bit more complicated to steal."

Hyundai and Kia have failed to include "industry-standard" anti-theft technologies, which has led to a "steep rise" in thefts, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, a Democrat, alleged in a lawsuit filed last week against the car companies. He accused the carmakers of "sheer negligence."

More than half of all vehicles stolen in Chicago this year have been Kia or Hyundai vehicles, according to the mayor's office. Videos exposing the security flaws of the vehicle's anti-theft systems have circulated on social media sites since 2021.

"If they just put a little bit more effort into making things a little bit more tougher, it wouldn't be that many crimes out here," Crystal said. "They wouldn't try as much if it wasn't so easy to get into."

To "get to the root of the problem," prosecutors should be "going after the manufacturers," Zara told Fox News.

Kia and Hyundai offered anti-theft software updates for the affected cars in February, but few vehicles had received the update as of May, according to the Associated Press. In May, Kia and Hyundai reached a $200 million consumer class-action lawsuit settlement, however, the lawsuit was rejected by a federal judge earlier this month.

"Lawsuits filed by municipalities against Kia are without merit," James Bell, Kia's head of corporate communications, said in a statement to Fox News. A spokesperson for Hyundai said in a statement to FOX Business that more anti-theft technologies are now standard on all vehicles made by the company as of November 2021.

Motor vehicle thefts for the week of Aug. 21 doubled year-over-year, Chicago police data show. In D.C., they've similarly more than doubled compared to the first eight months of 2022, according to local police

"Prosecute the criminals," Jerron told Fox News. "The car manufacturers, I mean, they're doing what they can."

Joanna, agreed: "We have to go after the criminals."

"People work too hard to get what they have for people to steal them and break into them," she continued.

"It is not the car that you should be concerned about," Natalie, a Lafayette, Louisiana, resident, told Fox News. "It's the people that are leading our country, our nation, the mayors and everything."

"If we put more of the things in place for these youth that are stealing the cars, then we will have less crime," she continued.

US offers $12 billion to auto makers, suppliers for advanced vehicles - Reuters

rest.indah.link

WASHINGTON, Aug 31 (Reuters) - The Biden administration is offering $12 billion in grants and loans for auto makers and suppliers to retrofit their plants to produce electric and other advanced vehicles, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said on Thursday.

"While we transition to EVs, we want to ensure that workers can transition in place, that there is no worker, no community left behind," Granholm, a former governor of car-manufacturing state Michigan, told reporters in a call.

Speeding grants and other subsidies to fund conversion of existing auto plants to build electric vehicles could help the White House blunt criticism from automakers and the United Auto Workers (UAW) union over proposed environmental rules aimed to help usher in the EV era.

The UAW has warned that a rapid change could put thousands of jobs at risk in states such as Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Indiana.

Last week UAW members voted overwhelmingly in favor of authorizing a strike at the Detroit Three automakers if an agreement over wages and pension plans is not reached before the current four-year contract expires on Sept. 14.

On Thursday UAW President Shawn Fain cheered the announcement, saying the policy "makes clear to employers that the EV transition must include strong union partnerships with the high pay and safety standards that generations of UAW members have fought for and won."

President Joe Biden said in a release that "building a clean energy economy can and should provide a win-win opportunity for auto companies and unionized workers who have anchored the American economy for decades."

Fain has vowed to save a Jeep factory in Belvidere, Illinois, that Stellantis (STLAM.MI) has put on track to shutter. The automaker has left open the possibility that the factory could get a new product with government aid.

When asked about the chances that the grants could keep that factory open, Granholm said plants that had been built up around communities are "prime for taking advantage of these funding opportunities."

There will be no specific labor requirements for companies to obtain the funding, but projects that have better labor conditions will have a greater chance of receiving the funding, an Energy Department official said on the call.

The administration will also offer $3.5 billion in funding to domestic battery manufacturers, Granholm said.

For the advanced vehicles, $2 billion in grants will come from the Inflation Reduction Act which was passed by Democrats last year, and $10 billion in loans will derive from the Energy Department's Loans Program Office.

Dallas motorist who fatally hit pedestrian had prior DWI: police - The Dallas Morning News

rest.indah.link

The allegedly drunken motorist arrested Friday evening after a fatal auto-pedestrian crash in Old East Dallas had at least two previous DWI charges, according to police records.

About 8:30 p.m. Friday, Dallas police were dispatched to a major crash in the 6000 block of Abrams Road, according to an arrest-warrant affidavit obtained by The Dallas Morning News. Responding officers spoke to a woman named Kyli Phillips, 26, who said she had struck a pedestrian, identified as Howard Graham, 63, while she was northbound on Abrams Road, the document stated.

Graham died from his injuries, according to the affidavit.

A witness said Phillips pulled into a nearby apartment parking lot after she struck the pedestrian. The witness said they saw Phillips holding an alcoholic drink in a can that “was mostly full,” the affidavit stated. She also had a dog inside of her car.

Phillips told police she was driving home after work in Plano, the affidavit stated. She said she was northbound on Abrams Road “in the middle or left lane” when she struck the man.

Multiple responding officers noted that Phillips had a “strong odor of alcoholic beverage,” according to the affidavit.

She also told an officer she had not taken any medications, and had not smoked or consumed illegal drugs, according to police.

When police asked her if she had drank alcohol she said “I plead the Fifth,” according to the court document. She also refused field sobriety tests.

AAWireless is testing Apple CarPlay support - 9to5Google

rest.indah.link

Wireless adapters for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay have become incredibly common, but options that can handle both platforms are pretty rare. Now, AAWireless is adding support for wireless Apple CarPlay alongside wireless Android Auto through a new beta.

One of the key advantages of the AAWireless adapter for wireless Android Auto that we called out in our review last year is the adapter’s ability to receive firmware updates, and it’s had a few notable updates since it launched. Now, the company is starting to roll out firmware version 3.0.0, and it might be the biggest yet.

Announced on a changelog, AAWireless v3.0.0 is being rolled out in stages – it will not be available to all users right away – with a couple of quality-of-life adjustments, such as retrying to connect to your phone if the process fails and tweaks to the “non-dongle” mode.

But more importantly, AAWireless is adding CarPlay support.

This addition is available only in a beta testing version for the time being, meaning you should expect bugs or for the feature to potentially not even work. When it does work, though, the dongle will be able to double as a wireless CarPlay adapter. A couple of known issues the company notes on its website are that audio could be “choppy” on some vehicles and that steering wheel controls may not be working in some cars. Another potential hurdle might be that initial pairing could see the connection quickly end and require manually allowing CarPlay to run, but future connections should work automatically.

Getting AAWireless set up with CarPlay appears to be reasonably simple, but it will require an Android phone.

This is the AAWireless app.

First, you’ll have to be using the latest version of the AAWireless companion app and your device will need to be updated to the 3.0.0 firmware version. You’ll also need to ensure you’re using a “generation 2” AAWireless unit, which carries the model number “cs317”; this should be noted on a sticker on the back of the device and AAWireless tells 9to5Google that all units sold outside of the initial Indiegogo campaign are Gen 2 models.

From there, CarPlay works by default. You can set up either with Android Auto or CarPlay, just by connecting via Bluetooth as you usually would. When the device boots up and pairs to a phone, it will automatically choose between Android Auto or CarPlay.

There is no AAWireless app on iOS, but iPhone users will still be able to access some settings via app.aawireless.io when CarPlay is running through the adapter.

We can’t stress enough that CarPlay support on AAWireless is very much in its early stages, so you certainly shouldn’t buy the adapter with this functionality in mind, at least for now, nor should you expect things to function flawlessly. Still, we’re happy to see what is one of the best wireless Android Auto adapters just getting better.

Currently, 9to5Google readers can score an exclusive discount on AAWireless, with more details in our coverage from earlier this week.

Vinfast rallies on after becoming world's third-most valuable automaker - Reuters

rest.indah.link

Aug 28 (Reuters) - Shares of Vietnamese electric-vehicle maker Vinfast surged 21% on Monday, extending a rally from last week that more than quadrupled its market value to $160 billion.

The company made a blowout debut on Wall Street this month and has quickly grown in valuation to become the third-most valuable automaker - only behind Tesla (TSLA.O) and Toyota (7203.T).

But Vinfast's small amount of publicly available shares has made the stock prone to volatility, with shares jumping or slumping more than 14% in 11 of the past 12 sessions.

The stock was on track to add nearly $33.6 billion to its market capitalization, based on a share price of $83.33.

Vinfast's shares were among the most actively watched on Stocktwits, a popular website with retail investors.

Vinfast is almost entirely controlled by Pham Nhat Vuong, Vietnam's richest man and founder of parent conglomerate Vingroup, with a stake of about 99.7%, according to a filing.

Despite the market enthusiasm, Vinfast faces a long road before it can start competing meaningfully with Tesla and legacy automakers that are pouring billions of dollars to grab a share of the EV market.

Only 137 Vinfast EVs were registered in the United States through June, according to S&P Global Mobility.

The firm is also entering the U.S. and European markets at a time when EV demand is slowing and Tesla has waged a price war to defend its dominance.

Vinfast expects to sell as many as 50,000 electric vehicles this year, compared with Tesla's projection to deliver 1.8 million cars.

To drive sales, Vinfast is breaking away from the direct-to-consumer approach used by Tesla and turning to dealers. The company is also building a $4 billion factory in North Carolina.

What happened to shut down Toyota's production in Japan? - Reuters

rest.indah.link

Aug 30 (Reuters) - Toyota Motor (7203.T) was ramping back production at its Japan-based factories on Wednesday after a computer system processing orders for vehicle parts broke down on Tuesday, forcing the closure of 14 assembly plants.

The disruption shut down a system that is at the core of Toyota's lean manufacturing, a way of reducing inventory and maximising production efficiency that the Japanese automaker pioneered and its rivals have widely adopted.

WHAT HAPPENED TO SHUT DOWN TOYOTA'S PRODUCTION IN JAPAN?

It's not clear what caused the system outage, and Toyota has not provided details on what went wrong. The company said the cause was not a cyberattack.

In February last year, Toyota also had to shut down the same 14 factories in Japan when one of its suppliers, Kojima Industries, which supplies plastic parts and electronic components to Toyota, said one of its file servers had been infected with a virus that carried an undisclosed threatening message.

That attack raised questions about the cybersecurity of Japan's supply chain.

WHAT'S THE IMPACT OF THE ONE-DAY LOSS OF PRODUCTION?

Toyota's production has been recovering this year, so the outage could be potentially more costly than the 2022 shutdown.

Toyota's domestic output was up 29% in the first half of this year, the first such increase in two years. Toyota makes a full range of vehicles in Japan from the budget Yaris to its most expensive models, including luxury Lexus brand cars.

Toyota's production in Japan - about a third of its global output - averaged about 13,500 vehicles a day in the first half of the year, Reuters calculations showed. That excludes vehicles from group automakers Daihatsu and Hino.

Its average global vehicle sale price in the most recent quarter was equivalent to $26,384, based on its financial reporting. Using that as a proxy would mean a full-day of production at the 14 plants would be equivalent to $356 million in revenue.

Toyota has not said how or whether it will look to recoup the lost output.

WHAT IS TOYOTA'S PRODUCTION AND SUPPLIER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM?

Toyota essentially invented modern auto assembly with its "kanban" system for notifying suppliers of what parts are needed where and when to minimize inventory.

"Kanban" means signboard in Japanese, and the Toyota engineer and later executive, Taichi Ono, who developed the system drew inspiration from watching an American supermarket chain, Piggly Wiggly, manage its shelve stock on a trip to the United States in the 1950s.

Toyota's system of lean production and just-in-time parts delivery has been adopted across the auto industry and widely studied. It shifted from a system of printed cards that managed supplier workflow to an internet-based "e-kanban" system more than 20 years ago.

Toyota's kanban system, which relies on simple visual cues to organise workflow, has been adopted for other industries, including software development.

WHAT OTHER PROBLEMS HAS TOYOTA FACED SINCE ITS LEADERSHIP TRANSITION?

Koji Sato took over from Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda as CEO in April.

In the months since, even as the company looks to overhaul its approach to electric vehicles and related manufacturing challenges with an eye on U.S. EV leader Tesla (TSLA.O), it has also reported some embarrassing missteps.

In April, Toyota said affiliate Daihatsu had rigged part of the door in side-collision safety tests for some 88,000 small cars, most of which were sold under the Toyota brand.

In May, Toyota said it had inadvertently exposed customer data on the internet for more than 2 million Toyota owners because of an error in how it had configured a cloud-based system it uses to track service.

Toyota to restart Japan production on Wednesday after system failure - Reuters

rest.indah.link
  • Toyota suspends production at all 14 domestic assembly plants
  • System failure preventing Toyota from ordering parts
  • Cause under investigation, not likely to be a cyberattack
  • Plants make up third of Toyota world output -Reuters calculation
  • Stock closes down 0.2%

TOKYO, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Toyota Motor (7203.T) will restart operations at its assembly plants in Japan on Wednesday, after a production system malfunction brought domestic output to a halt at the world's biggest-selling automaker.

Toyota will resume operations at 25 production lines of a dozen plants in its home market from Wednesday morning and add the final two plants from the afternoon, it said.

The company continues to investigate the cause of the glitch, which it said was not due to a cyberattack and prevented it from ordering components.

The plants together account for about a third of the automaker's global production, Reuters calculations showed.

Toyota's domestic production had been on the rebound after a series of output cuts it blamed on semiconductor shortages. Output was up 29% in January-June, the first such increase in two years.

Its Japan output averaged about 13,500 vehicles daily in the first half of the year, Reuters calculations showed. That excludes vehicles from group automakers Daihatsu and Hino.

Operations were halted for a day last year when a supplier suffered a cyberattack, hampering Toyota's ability to order parts. Toyota resumed operations using a back-up network.

Analysts said Toyota could be tested in making up for output lost during the outage, such as by running extra shifts.

"Output was running at full capacity so there's little additional room for production," said Seiji Sugiura, an analyst at Tokai Tokyo Research Institute.

Tuesday's incident also had a knock-on effect. Group firm Toyota Industries (6201.T) said it has partially suspended operations at two engine plants due to the automaker's glitch.

Toyota is a pioneer of just-in-time inventory management, which keeps down costs but means supply chain snarls put production at risk.

While the cause of the latest malfunction was unclear, corporate Japan has been on alert in recent days as businesses and government offices reported harassing phone calls.

The government said the calls were likely from China and related to Japan's release of treated radioactive water from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean.

Toyota's share price closed down 0.21% at 2,431.5 yen after spending much of the morning deeper in negative territory.

All assembly lines at Toyota's auto plants in Japan have been shut down by computer problems - The Associated Press

rest.indah.link

TOKYO (AP) — All 28 vehicle assembly lines at Toyota’s 14 auto plants in Japan shut down Tuesday over a problem in its computer system that deals with incoming auto parts.

The automaker doesn’t believe the problem was caused by a cyberattack but the cause is still under investigation, said spokeswoman Sawako Takeda.

Toyota said later that production will restart on Wednesday.

“We apologize for all the troubles we have caused,” it said in a statement.

Toyota declined to say what models being produced might be affected.

The shutdown comes after a shortage of computer chips and other auto parts stalled production in Asian nations affected by social restrictions over the coronavirus pandemic.

The chips shortage woes had only recently started to ease for Japan’s top automaker, which makes the Camry sedan, Prius hybrid, Lexus luxury brand.

US auto sales hint slowdown as economic woes weigh - S&P Global Mobility - Reuters

rest.indah.link

Aug 28 (Reuters) - U.S.-light vehicle sales are expected to remain steadfast in August but are showing early signs of a slowdown, S&P Global Mobility said on Monday.

"Rising interest rates, credit tightening and new vehicle pricing levels slowly decelerating remain pressure points for consumers," said Chris Hopson, principal analyst at S&P Global Mobility.

New light vehicle sales in August are estimated to be 1.34 million units, up 18% year-over-year, according to the report.

The automotive research company also lowered its annual forecast to 15.2 million units of new light vehicles estimated to be sold in the U.S. from sales of 15.7 million units projected in July.

Supply of vehicles could be disrupted in North America as negotiations with labor unions have been heated up lately, the report added.

"The greatest threat to the forecast in the near-term surrounds the union negotiations between the United Auto Workers in the US and Unifor in Canada with their respective contracts set to expire in mid-September 2023," said Joe Langley, associate director at S&P Global Mobility.

UAW on Friday said members voted overwhelmingly in favor of authorizing a strike at the Detroit Three automakers if an agreement is not reached before the current four-year contract expires on Sept. 14.
