The allegedly drunken motorist arrested Friday evening after a fatal auto-pedestrian crash in Old East Dallas had at least two previous DWI charges, according to police records.
About 8:30 p.m. Friday, Dallas police were dispatched to a major crash in the 6000 block of Abrams Road, according to an arrest-warrant affidavit obtained by The Dallas Morning News. Responding officers spoke to a woman named Kyli Phillips, 26, who said she had struck a pedestrian, identified as Howard Graham, 63, while she was northbound on Abrams Road, the document stated.
Graham died from his injuries, according to the affidavit.
Phillips was booked into Dallas County jail Friday and is facing a driving while intoxicated charge — third or more, according to the Dallas County jail website. Her bail has been set at $75,000. It is unclear if she has an attorney.
A witness said Phillips pulled into a nearby apartment parking lot after she struck the pedestrian. The witness said they saw Phillips holding an alcoholic drink in a can that “was mostly full,” the affidavit stated. She also had a dog inside of her car.
Phillips told police she was driving home after work in Plano, the affidavit stated. She said she was northbound on Abrams Road “in the middle or left lane” when she struck the man.
Multiple responding officers noted that Phillips had a “strong odor of alcoholic beverage,” according to the affidavit.
She also told an officer she had not taken any medications, and had not smoked or consumed illegal drugs, according to police.
When police asked her if she had drank alcohol she said “I plead the Fifth,” according to the court document. She also refused field sobriety tests.
