North America Auto Production Slowly Rebounds: S&P Global Mobility - Forbes

rest.indah.link

North American auto production is rebounding somewhat in 2022 – S&P Global Mobility said this week it expects production of about 14.7 million cars and trucks this year in North America – that’s an increase of 12.5% vs. 2021.

However, that’s not enough of an increase to reverse the trend to record high prices due to the combination of high demand and low new-vehicle supplies, analysts said.

“The important thing to put that in context, is just how bad things got in 2021,” said Mark Fulthorpe, executive director, Global Production Forecasting. By comparison, 2022 looks pretty good.

Production was a disappointment in 2021, coming off of 2020, when production fell due to COVID-19 related factory shutdowns. It then took longer than expected to ramp auto factories back up, employing social distancing and other COVID-19 precautions.

In 2019, North American production was about 16.3 million. But according to S&P Global Mobility, auto production in North America was almost exactly flat in 2021 vs. 2020, at about 13 million cars and trucks.

The year started out much more promisingly in 2021. For the first quarter, it looked as if auto sales and production in North America were on their way back to pre-pandemic levels. But in the meantime, a shortage developed of the computer chips used to control modern automotive electronics.

That was partly due to pandemic-related shutdowns, made worse by the fact that the auto industry had to compete for chips with other industries, like consumer electronics.

Other, short-term factors made the shortage worse in 2021, such as a fire at a chip manufacturing plant in Japan, and ice storms in Texas that closed additional chip manufacturing capacity. “These were clearly not normal supply constraints,” Fulthorpe said.

Then in the third quarter of 2021, “just when we started to see recovery from those external shocks,” pandemic-related shutdowns closed factories in Malaysia that are important to global computer chip manufacturing, he said.

Still, North America is enjoying a bigger increase than the projected worldwide average. S&P Global Mobility expects worldwide production of about 80.4 million cars and trucks in 2022, up about 4.1% vs. 2021.

“This plays out more positively in North America than some other regions,” Fulthorpe said.

Automakers have managed to increase production in part by producing a smaller variety of potential combinations of features and options that employ chips, he said. In some cases, they have even produced some vehicles for sale lacking certain chips, which are to be installed later.

What they haven’t done, so far, is to bring about a big increase in global chip-making capacity devoted to the auto industry, Fulthorpe said. That’s going to take years.

Fired-up N.J. Senate President calls opposition to costly auto insurance plan ‘nonsense’ - NJ.com

rest.indah.link

New Jersey’s top lawmaker came out swinging in fierce defense of his legislation that could force more than 1 million people in the state to pay more for car insurance each year.

Senate President Nicholas Scutari on Monday defended the bill that would hike the minimum amount of liability insurance in the Garden State from its current $15,000 coverage to $25,000 beginning in 2023, and a minimum of $35,000 starting in 2026. He says it’s long overdue to protect victims of crashes.

“This is all nonsense,” said Scutari, D-Union, during a Senate committee hearing, arguing the cost to drive in the state would not immediately increase.

“(Insurers) cannot raise rates for a minimum of three and a half years. They cannot substantiate a raise in rates when we go to $25,000 in coverage. The industry cannot substantiate it. It is an impossibility. The Department of Banking and Insurance will not allow it,” he said.

“The people of New Jersey need this Legislature to protect them from themselves because we tell them what they need to get, and that’s what they get.”

He added taxpayers are the ones who are stuck with the costs to “subsidize unpaid medical bills” and “everything that the insurance industry doesn’t cover” in the minimum policy.

“This is insane,” he said.

Scutari’s impassioned defense of the bill (S481) came moments after people urged legislators not to support the bill.

“Why the urgency?” John Harmon, president and CEO of the African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey, asked. “Could we not pull this back and do some impact studies?”

Harmon testified at the committee hearing Monday and spoke to NJ Advance Media Tuesday. He said he was surprised to see Scutari appear briefly at the event to “whip the votes” and then disappear moments before the panel voted 8-4 along party lines to advance the bill to the full Senate for a vote.

He argued Black and brown New Jerseyans would disproportionately be affected by the bill and said he was surprised to not hear from Scutari or other of the bill’s sponsors before the measure headed to the Legislature for a vote before it lands on Gov. Phil Murphy’s desk.

“We’re definitely open to a compromise but we weren’t afforded the opportunity to have that conversation,” Harmon said. “Why is this so important to him versus all the other things going?”

A group that represents insurers, the Insurance Council of New Jersey, agreed raising minimum coverage to $25,000 but opposed the bill because of the automatic increase in 2026. The average cost of a claim with injuries is $18,000.

They estimate 1.1 million New Jersey drivers will have to pay an extra $130 a year if the bill is signed into law.

The legislation is a pared-down reform bill that Scutari initially hoped to have passed.

He sponsored more than a half-dozen bills that opponents warned would force 1.27 million drivers to pay as much as $350 more a year.

His original measures would have required drivers to select plans with a minimum of $250,000 in personal injury protection, commonly called PIP. Another bill would prohibit motorists from using private health insurance coverage as the primary payer for personal injury protection coverage in exchange for an auto insurance discount.

They all passed in a Senate committee last week but were apparently dropped in the face of backlash.

Scutari was having none of it on Monday.

“Let the insurance industry answer for why they won’t pay necessary medical bills (and) continue to raise rates,” he said. “And we have the dead last coverage in the country.”

These Were The Most Exceptional Cars At The 2022 New York Auto Show - HotCars

rest.indah.link

The New York International Auto Show returned for 2022 after a two-year hiatus. We have to admit this year's exhibition had a respectable turnout. Today, we have a wide range of new energy sources, including solar and hydrogen, which we can use to power our vehicles. Last but not least, we have electric drivetrains, which is the most popular option.

The Madison Square Garden hosted the inaugural New York City Auto Show back in 1901. This year's New York International Auto Show was held in the Jacob Javits Convention Center, where electric vehicles and SUVs were the main attractions. Even though gas-powered vehicles were still present, every leading carmaker had an EV or hybrid vehicle on exhibit.

Although a significant number of manufacturers were present, this was not the case for all of them. Well-known automakers like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Acura, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Buick, Cadillac, GMC, Jaguar, Land Rover, Tesla, and Rivian did not show up at the 2022 show. Still, it took time to examine all the stunning designs. Listed below are our faves.

The 2022 Ford GT Holman Moody

This limited-edition Ford GT honors the 1-2-3 winner in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966. It looks like the original automobile thanks to the same paint color, red highlights, and other minor characteristics. The manufacturer displayed it beside the car that competed at Le Mans back in 1966, and the new GT looks fantastic compared to its 1966 sibling. Visible carbon fiber, black Brembo brakes, gold and red paint, and 20-inch wheels are just some of the exterior features that make this automobile stand out from the others.

The interior features even more carbon fiber, deep black Alcantara, gold contrast piping, and a plethora of gold inlays. The Holman Moody GT will be the ninth model in the Heritage Edition GT series, which debuted in 2006 and continued until 2017. This is the final Heritage Edition for the 2022 model year, according to Ford. The manufacturer emphasized that it will only be sold in extremely restricted numbers. Sadly, it is more likely that Ford will only take orders from certified GT clients.

Deus Vayanne EV Hypercar

This electric hypercar, the result of a partnership between Williams Engineering, Italdesign, and Deus, will be produced in extremely small numbers. The output is anticipated to be greater than 2,200 horsepower, and the acceleration from 0 to 62 mph is said to take only 1.99 seconds. These are somewhat impressive specifications. Assuming the data is credible, the Deus Vayanne hypercar would have a higher peak power rating than the 1900 hp Pininfarina Battista or 1900 hp Rimac C Two models.

The inside is equipped with eco-friendly materials, and Deus is dedicated to a waste-free manufacturing process. The first delivery is scheduled for 2025, and Deus intends to produce 99 vehicles in total. As a refresher, Deus Automobiles was founded in 2020 in Vienna, Austria. The company took a position in the incredibly competitive hypercar industry by delivering a new and realistic perspective as well as innovative designs. Luxury, performance, and exclusivity are all hallmarks of Deus.

Chrysler Airflow Graphite Concept

The Airflow Concept, which debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this year, has been reworked for the 2022 New York Auto Show with a new paint, revised interior design, and a new Chrysler badge. The Airflow Graphite Concept is now finished in Galaxy Black with Cyprus Copper highlights. The non-graphite Airflow concept was dressed in Arctic White and Celestial Blue cladding.

The front fascia has been modified, with the Chrysler wings being nearly engulfed by the illuminated grille. The massive 22-inch wheels and external trim on the vehicle are also copper-colored. Inside, there are no major alterations other than a color change. A black-and-white color scheme is used throughout the inside. Meanwhile, graphs on the infotainment touchscreen are adorned with copper.

Clear without saying, the Airflow Graphite concept is more appealing when compared to its sibling. The Chrysler Airflow concept seems to be ready to go into production. There are plans to put the Airflow on the market in 2025, making it the first all-electric Chrysler. Following in the Airflow's footsteps, other Chrysler EVs are expected to enter production. Moreover, the company will announce its full EV portfolio by 2028. It is also not excluded that many of the Airflow's design elements will be used in future automobiles, even if the concept is never put into production.

Li Auto Stock Breaks Out As China Mulls Extending EV Subsidies, BYD Stock Nears Buy Point - Investor's Business Daily

rest.indah.link

Li Auto stock broke out Thursday as China mulled extending a tax break on purchases of electric cars. BYD stock neared a buy point. Other China EV stocks also advanced.

X

EV startups Li Auto (LI), Nio (NIO) and Xpeng (XPEV) aspire to shake Tesla's (TSLA) dominance in the Chinese market for luxury electric cars. They are also challenging homegrown EV and battery giant BYD (BYDDF).

At a high level Chinese government meeting Wednesday, officials suggested extending a policy that exempts so-called new energy vehicles from purchase tax, local reports said. New energy vehicles, or NEVs, include all-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and fuel-cell vehicles.

IBD Live: A New Tool For Daily Stock Market Analysis

The exemption could keep NEV sales growing in the world's largest market for electric cars. China EV sales more than doubled in 2021 but ran into headwinds for parts of 2022.

The exemption policy is currently set to expire at year-end. In 2014, China began its policy allowing consumers who buy NEVs to save roughly 10,000 yuan ($1,580) vs. those who buy fossil fuel cars, according to CnEVPost.com. The policy has been extended and renewed a few times since.

China EV sales slumped sharply in April. A fresh Covid surge led to harsh lockdowns, closing down factories and hitting the EV supply chain.

Li Auto Stock Breaks Out, BYD Nears Buy Point

Shares of Li Auto gapped up nearly 7% to 39.24 on the stock market today. Li Auto stock topped a 37.75 buy point from a long and deep consolidation. LI stock is far extended above the 10- and 40-week averages after a huge rally in June and the launch of its second EV, the L9. The relative strength line pegged a multiyear high as LI stock broke out Thursday.

BYD stock rose 2.9% to 39.42 Thursday. The Tesla archrival closed in on a 39.81 buy point from a cup-with-handle base. Nio added 2.8%. Xpeng gained 7.9%.

CATL's New Qilin Battery

On Thursday, Li Auto CEO Li Xiang suggested in a tweet that his company will use CATL's third-generation EV battery, the Qilin, next year.

Also on Thursday, Chinese EV battery giant CATL unveiled the Qilin. It claims the Qilin battery offers a 13% increase in power vs. Tesla's upcoming 4680 battery, with the same chemistry and same pack size.

CATL, which also supplies Tesla, aims to mass produce the Qilin in 2023.

Lagging behind Li Auto stock and others, Tesla stock lost 0.4% Thursday. The top EV maker will suspend production at its Shanghai plant in July to allow necessary upgrades, Reuters said.

Workers Get Option to Wear Masks in Union Auto Plants - The Detroit Bureau

rest.indah.link

Ford, General Motors and Stellantis announed Wednesday that masks will be optional at their plants across the U.S. The policy was made with the consent of the United Auto Workers union

Weld curtains hang across the door line at FCA’s Sterling Heights (Michigan) Assembly Plant to protect employees from the spread and transmission of COVID-19.

If a facility is in a high-risk county as identified by the Center for Disease Control, the Covid-19 Task Force, comprised of leaders from the UAW, Ford, GM and Stellantis, currently recommends mask wearing at facilities in CDC-designated high-risk counties. Masks will continue to make masks available at all facilities regardless of the CDC risk level.

“Each company will communicate when these changes go into effect at their locations,” the Covid-19 Task Force statement said.

The joint statement also noted, “While masks will be optional, they will still be available for those who choose to wear one based on personal preference. The CDC recommends that those who are immunocompromised or high risk for severe disease wear a mask or respirator that provides greater protection.”

The Task Force will continue to monitor data carefully and make any adjustments necessary to protect the health and safety of employees, the statement added.

Keeping workplaces safe remains one of the highest priorities of the Task Force members. One of the best ways to fight this virus is by getting vaccinated. The Task Force continues to encourage everyone to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and boosted when eligible, to protect family, friends and communities.

The automakers had reimposed the mandate in mid-May after a spike in a new variant of Covid-19 showed up around Detroit.

Masks part of auto factory life for two years

The automakers and the UAW have tinkered with the mask mandates since resuming production following sweeping shutdowns in March 2020 that followed the initial outbreak of Covid-19, and before masks became tangled up in the politics and the culture wars.

Masks will now be optional at UAW plants nationwide.

Masks were mandatory in auto factories before vaccines became available in January and February 2021. Since then, the mandates have gradually eased, even though the death toll from Covid-19 continued.

Masks were made optional in August 2021, but became mandatory again during the Omicron surge. They were loosened again in March 2022 before being reimposed in May in the face of the local surge around Detroit.

The mask mandate adopted by Detroit’s manufacturers have been adopted across the auto industry and in other businesses as well. But even though the Pandemic has claimed nearly one million lives in the past two years, masks have become increasingly controversial.

The automakers will continue to adhere to state and local masking requirements where applicable.

The CDC recommends that those who are immunocompromised or high risk for severe disease wear a mask or respirator that provides greater protection. People with symptoms, a positive test, or exposure to someone with COVID-19 also should wear a mask and not report to work.

The Task Force will continue to monitor data carefully and make any adjustments necessary to protect the health and safety of employees.

The Task Force continues to encourage everyone to roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated against COVID-19, or boosted when eligible, to protect family, friends and communities. While the UAW and the companies will continue following other protocols that have kept workplaces safe, one of the best ways to fight this virus is by getting vaccinated, the UAW said

Android Auto is now ‘only for car screens,’ as phone version shuts down for good - 9to5Google

rest.indah.link

Android Auto is officially saying goodbye to the version that works directly on your phone, as it moves to being an experience “only available for car screens.”

Android Auto is ‘only available for car screens’

When it first debuted back in 2015, Android Auto was available both in compatible vehicles, as well as with a version that could be used on your smartphone’s screen. Years later, Google decided to pull the plug on that experience, but had to offer “Android Auto for Phone Screens” as a stopgap measure while its replacement was still in the works.

Early this month, a message started appearing in Android Auto for Phone Screens, saying that it would go away soon.

Android Auto for phone screens will stop working soon

Google had already discontinued Android Auto for Phone Screens on devices running Android 12 and higher in 2021, but left the experience for those on prior versions of the operating system. Google confirmed that the Phone Screens app would be shut down for everyone, but declined to share when the app would actually stop working.

Now, that day has come.

As of earlier this week, Android Auto for Phone Screens has stopped working entirely for users on Android 11 and prior. The app is still installed, but when launched, immediately redirects to the Android Auto settings page where it says that the platform is now only available “for car screens.”

Android Auto is now only available for car screens

The change immediately showed on our TCL 30 V running on Android 11, and started showing up a few days ago for some users.

Google Assistant Driving Mode is the replacement

Of course, the reason for the shutdown here is to send users over to Google Assistant Driving Mode.

Driving Mode saw its long-delayed wide rollout in 2021, bringing a different UI compared to what had been announced in 2019 at first, but finally got up to par by September. We recently took a look at the two experiences, and found that, by way of most core features, Driving Mode is mostly a suitable replacement for Android Auto for Phone Screens. But, it’s a distinctly different experience, and one that doesn’t feel like a replacement.

We concluded:

It makes sense for Google to want to close off the existing Android Auto for Phone Screens app – it’s now a full generation out of date, and there’s another revamp to Android Auto around the corner. But Assistant Driving Mode isn’t the replacement most folks wanted.

It’s a shame to see the simplicity of Android Auto on your phone’s display going away for good. It was a great way to have a simple, driving-friendly interface when in the car, while not requiring a brand new vehicle or head unit replacement.

In any case, what’s done is done – Android Auto is only for car screens now.

Tesla Is Forcing the Auto Industry to Rethink How It Sells Cars - The New York Times

rest.indah.link

Tesla shifted to selling cars entirely online in 2019. Now, some established automakers, like Ford, are talking about taking a similar approach.

In 2019, many auto experts said Tesla was making a big mistake by deciding to sell cars only online, arguing that whatever bad feelings people had about dealerships they were essential to the car business.

But the strategy, which was adopted by Elon Musk, Tesla’s chief executive, and combines direct sales with a limited number of stores and service centers, appears to be proving the naysayers wrong. The company dominates the fast-growing electric car market even as other manufacturers struggle to sell cars because of a shortage of computer chips.

Tesla’s approach, which has been copied by other young electric carmakers like Rivian and Lucid Motors, could eventually have major ramifications for the auto industry. Most carmakers and auto dealers are earning rich profits right now because the shortage of new cars has pushed up prices for both new and used cars. Still, car companies and dealers may have to eventually adopt some of the changes Tesla has introduced to win over buyers who have grown used to buying cars online.

People who have traded in conventional cars for electric vehicles made by Tesla and newer companies said they were pleased with the experience and would consider buying future cars in the same way.

“Easiest big purchase of my life, crazy easy,” Rachel Ryan, who lives near Los Angeles, said about her 2021 purchase of a Tesla Model Y. “I bought it while my husband was at work,” she added. “When he came home, I told him he wouldn’t be driving my minivan anymore.”

Ms. Ryan said the only service problem she had was a flat tire from a nail. “Tesla came to my house to fix it,” she said. “Any questions I have, I just email, and they are on it within minutes.”

Buying online is a must for people looking to purchase an electric car made by Tesla, Rivian or Lucid, whose customers can buy only online and directly from the manufacturer. But online car shopping appeals to a large proportion of all car buyers, even those buying combustion-engine cars through dealerships, said Michelle Krebs, an executive analyst for Cox Automotive.

“Our data shows consumers want to do more of the process online but most don’t want to eliminate the dealer visit altogether,” Ms. Krebs said. “They just wanted the dealer experience to be something else — focused on the product, the features of the product and a test drive.”

She said some dealerships had started digitizing some or all of the buying process in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, when showrooms shut down like other retail businesses. In Europe, some carmakers have gone even further. Daimler, Volkswagen and Volvo are selling cars directly to consumers or have announced plans to do so.

U.S. automakers have also signaled that they would like to make big changes. The chief executive of Ford Motor, Jim Farley, said at an investor conference this month that the company’s distribution and advertising costs per car were about $2,000 higher than Tesla’s. Mr. Farley said Ford wanted to sell electric cars only online at nonnegotiable prices without keeping a large inventory of cars at dealerships.

He added that dealerships would remain important but would have to become more “specialized.” He likened what is happening in the auto industry to the retail business, where the rise of Amazon forced established retailers to sell more on the internet and use physical stores in new ways.

“It’s kind of like what happened between Amazon and Target,” Mr. Farley said. “Target could have gone away, but they didn’t. They bolted on an e-commerce platform, and then they use their physical store to add groceries and make returns much easier than Amazon.”

Alex Welsh for The New York Times

Established automakers are unlikely to do away with dealerships for another reason: State laws often require them to sell cars through franchised dealers and can make it hard or impossible for automakers to deal directly with customers.

Tesla has lobbied state lawmakers to change laws governing auto sales and has gotten lawmakers in many places to allow the company and other automakers that never had dealerships to sell cars directly to customers.

But in some states like Texas, where Tesla is now based and has a factory, the company has struggled to persuade lawmakers to change laws and rules that favor dealerships. For example, Texas offers a $2,500 rebate to people who buy electric vehicles, but buyers of Teslas are not eligible because those cars are not sold by franchised dealerships.

The National Automobile Dealers Association, which represents dealers, has long opposed direct sales of cars and has urged lawmakers to require Tesla to use dealers, arguing that dealerships are vital to the auto industry and local economies. They have also said Tesla’s approach is much less convenient for car buyers and owners.

“We’re the face of the manufacturer in every small town in America,” Bill Fox, a former chairman of the association, told AutoGuide.com in 2015.

It’s not just dealers who have criticized Tesla. Some Tesla owners complain that repairing or fixing problems with their cars can be an ordeal.

The automaker operates about 160 service centers in the United States, which is far fewer than more established companies — Chevrolet, for example, has more than 3,000 dealerships nationwide. Tesla pledges to send a technician to customers’ homes for minor repairs, but bigger problems have to be dealt with by mechanics at the service centers.

James Klafehn of Ithaca, N.Y., hosts a YouTube channel that focuses on electric vehicles and related topics. He bought a Tesla in 2019 and has published videos documenting how hard it has been to get a variety of problems resolved because he lives several hours from a Tesla service center.

In an October 2019 video, he was scathing about the problems with his Model X sport utility vehicle, which included a hole in a panel and an indentation in a door’s weatherstrip. “I am not excited to make this video. I’ve been dreading it hoping for something positive to happen,” he said. “Unfortunately after five weeks of Model X ownership, the Tesla service experience has been very poor.”

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.

Other owners who live far from Tesla service centers say the distance has not been a problem. That may be because electric cars tend to require less maintenance than combustion-engine vehicles.

Bill McGuire, the editor in chief of Mac’s Motor City Garage, a website for car enthusiasts, said he had driven 99 miles from his Toledo, Ohio, home to Clarkston, Mich., for a test drive at a Tesla store and subsequently picked his car up at a Tesla service center in Columbus, Ohio.

“It was my first online car buying experience — it was a bit of a surprise and mainly a pleasant one,” Mr. McGuire said. “Some people might want a lot more hand-holding.”

The only problem he encountered with his Model 3 was condensation in the taillights. Tesla sent a technician, and the taillights were replaced in his garage.

Other young electric car companies, like Rivian and Lucid, have even fewer showrooms and service centers than Tesla. Rivian has 19 in the United States, and Lucid has just 10, with seven more scheduled to open this year. That has not dissuaded tens of thousands of people from reserving cars made by the two companies.

Like Tesla, both automakers offer to send technicians to customers’ homes for minor repairs and say major repairs will be handled at service centers. To allay buyers’ fears that more substantial mechanic work could be a hassle, Lucid goes so far as to promise free transport to its nearest service center for cars needing major repairs.

BEIJING, China, June 21, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Li Auto Inc. (“Li Auto” or the “Company”) (Nasdaq: LI; HKEX: 2015), a leader in China’s new energy vehicle market, today unveiled Li L9, the Company’s flagship smart SUV for families. Li L9 is a six-seat, full-size flagship SUV, offering superior space and comfort for family users. Its self-developed flagship range extension and chassis systems provide excellent drivability with a CLTC range of 1,315 kilometers and a WLTC range of 1,100 kilometers. Li L9 also features the Company’s self-developed autonomous driving system, Li AD Max, and top-notch vehicle safety measures to protect every family passenger. Li L9’s innovative five-screen, three-dimensional interactive intelligent cockpit brings a new level of driving and entertainment experience. Li L9 comes standard with over 100 flagship features at a retail price of RMB459,800.

Li L9 is open for reservation starting today and will arrive at all Li Auto retail stores nation-wide by July 1, with test drives available from July 16. Delivery will commence by the end of August 2022.

Meanwhile, the Company announced that it will open-source its fully self-developed AEB system to promote autonomous driving safety technology in the industry and make travel safer for more users.

Flagship Range Extension System and Chassis System

Li L9 is equipped with a dual-motor, intelligent, all-wheel drive system with maximum power of 330 kilowatts and maximum torque of 620 Newton meters, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 5.3 seconds and ensuring performance and smoothness. Li L9 features a 44.5 kilowatt-hour new-generation NCM lithium battery, supporting a longer driving range under EV mode of a CLTC range of 215 kilometers and a WLTC range of 180 kilometers.

Li L9’s range extension system is powered by a self-developed and self-manufactured 1.5-liter, four-cylinder, turbo-charged engine, boosting maximum thermal efficiency to 40.5% and reducing fuel consumption under the CLTC standard operating conditions to 5.9 liters per 100 kilometers. Coupled with a low drag coefficient and high motor efficiency, Li L9’s CLTC range reaches 1,315 kilometers and its WLTC range reaches 1,100 kilometers. It can also supply up to 3.5 kilowatts of electricity for external use, providing additional utility for flexible use anytime, anywhere.

Li L9’s chassis has a self-developed control system, a double-wishbone front suspension and a five-link rear suspension. These work in tandem with its smart air spring and continuous damping control (CDC) system, responding in milliseconds and empowering Li L9’s chassis to adjust based on road conditions for outstanding handling and ride comfort.

Li L9 features a self-developed central vehicle domain controller, enabling high-speed processing of complex vehicle information and precise vehicle control with millisecond-grade response time.

Flagship Safety System to Protect Each Family Passenger

Safety always has been a top priority for Li Auto. Li L9 satisfies the highest safety requirements of the China-New Car Assessment Program (“C-NCAP” or “中国新车评价规程”) and the China Insurance Automotive Safety Index (“C-IAS” or “中国保险汽车安全指数”).

Every Li L9 comes standard with the Company’s flagship, full-stack self-developed ADAS, Li AD Max, with enhanced functionality bolstered by upgraded perception capability and data processing power. The perception hardware includes one forward 128-line LiDAR, six 8-megapixel cameras, five 2-megapixel cameras, one forward millimeter wave radar, and twelve ultrasonic sensors, realizing 360-degree detection of both vehicle surroundings and distant objects. In addition, Li L9 provides a “sentry” mode that monitors both the inside and outside of the vehicle through interior 3D ToF transmitters and exterior cameras.

To handle the increased processing needs resulting from the large number of sensors, Li AD Max is powered by dual Orin-X chips with 508 TOPS of computing power and real-time, efficient processing of fusion signals. The dual processors provide fallback redundancies for each other, ensuring more stable operation of the autonomous driving system.

In addition, the system is optimized to recognize and react to common accident scenarios, with features designed to identify and evade risks in advance and help prevent accidents.

Li L9 is the first volume production vehicle with redundancy design applied to its powertrain, steering system, braking system, and power supply system for the computing platform to ensure reliability and safety, since safety is never redundant for families.

Flagship Intelligent Cockpit

Li L9’s pioneering five-screen three-dimensional interactive mode elevates the driving and entertainment experience to a new level. Through a combined head-up display, or HUD, and interactive safe driving screen, key driving information is projected onto the front windshield through the HUD, enhancing driving safety by keeping the driver’s sightline on the road. The interactive safe driving screen, which is located above the steering wheel, adopts mini-LED and multi-touch technology, enabling easier interactions. Li L9’s other three screens, including the vehicle’s central control screen, the passenger entertainment screen, and the rear cabin entertainment screen, are 15.7-inch 3K automotive-grade OLED screens, delivering first-class entertainment experiences to the entire family.

With six microphones and a set of 3D ToF transmitters in the vehicle coupled with the deep learning-based, multi-module three-dimensional interactive technology pioneered by the Company, Li L9 provides a smart experience that can be enjoyed by family members of all ages, from kindergarteners to seniors.

Li L9 also uses Dolby Atmos technology combined with 4D vibration units embedded in the second-row seats, to create an unprecedented immersive experience equivalent to having an upscale 4D movie theater in the vehicle.

Li L9’s smart cockpit is supported by a computing platform composed of two Qualcomm Snapdragon automotive-grade 8155 chips, which ensures the smoothness and responsiveness of its five-screen three-dimensional interactions.

Flagship Space, Comfort and Design

The goal of Li L9 is to create a flagship smart SUV for families. With flagship space and comfort, it aims to make every member of the family feel at home on their journey. In terms of dimensions, Li L9 has a length of 5,218 millimeters, width of 1,998 millimeters, height of 1,800 millimeters, and wheelbase of 3,105 millimeters. Through careful designs of the vehicle layout and space, Li L9’s interiors space surpasses that of mainstream SUVs in its class.

Li L9’s seats are designed to maximize passenger comfort and reduce travel fatigue. Seats in all three rows come standard with electric seat adjustment controls and seat heating functions, as well as 3D comfort foam cushioning and Nappa leather upholstery. Features for the first- and second-row seats include seat ventilation and spa-level massage across ten acupressure points.

From its stance to its proportions, Li L9 showcases an elegant silhouette with no complicated or redundant lines in its design language. Li L9 adopts a signature integrated halo LED headlight, which is more than 2 meters from end to end in a continuous flow and seamlessly combines functionality with art. Its uniformity, coherence, softness and color temperature are all industry leading.

With flagship space and comfort, a flagship range extension system and chassis system, flagship safety features, and a flagship interactive experience, Li L9 aims to Create a Mobile Home, Create Happiness (创造移动的家, 创造幸福的家).

Motorola MA1 back in stock on Amazon from its manufacturer [U: Sold out] - 9to5Google

rest.indah.link

The Motorola MA1 was announced at CES 2022 and quickly went out of stock at Amazon and other retailers. This Motorola-branded wireless Android Auto adapter is now available again to buy from Amazon.

Update 6/21: Availability lasted just a day again.

Update 6/20: A week after it sold out, the Motorola MA1 is available again on Amazon. It remains sold by Motorola Voice and ships from Amazon, though the earliest delivery date is now July 5 (in the US) instead of just a few days.

Update 6/13: The Motorola MA1 is out of stock again from Motorola Voice on Amazon.

Original 6/12: After the $89.95 Motorola MA1 became available for pre-order in mid-January, this Chromecast-esque dongle started shipping to customers at the end of that month. It quickly went out of stock from the official seller, and those that wanted this device had to resort to third-party ones that often sold it with a surcharge.

As of Sunday evening, the Motorola MA1 is back in stock at Amazon from “Motorola Voice” – the manufacturer. It ships from Amazon and arrives via Prime delivery as early as this coming week.

It’s still not in supply at Best Buy or Target today. Hopefully, this marks the start of consistent availability to buy the wireless Android Auto dongle and end of price gouging.

Compared to a handful of third-party offerings that beat this branded gadget to market, Motorola Sound says it “licenses technology from Google that makes it simple for users to connect to existing USB-enabled Android Auto vehicles wirelessly.”

As we explained in our review:

Of course, it’s important to remember that this isn’t the Motorola you’re thinking of, but rather a sub-brand known as “Motorola Sound.” This product in particular is actually produced by SGW Global, which licenses the branding.

A USB-A cable, which is not removable, extends from the black puck. After connecting to a car, you pair your Android device and no longer have to plug in your phone to get Auto on your infotainment system. It’s aimed at older vehicles that do not offer wireless Android Auto natively.

Auto driver-assist safety: Letters - San Bernardino County Sun

rest.indah.link

Re “Autopilot tied to hundreds of crashes” (June 16):

As a Tesla owner, I always read articles about autopilot safety. I was dismayed that your business article implied that autopilot cars were unsafe. NHTS reports 38,824 people died from traffic accidents in 2020 but you make out that six deaths in autopilot equipped cars is so significant that it deserves a big write up. Similarly 392 crashes should have been compared to the over six million annual U.S. crashes, a tiny fraction of the total. You should be advocating the safety of autopilot cars as a way to reduce the six million crashes and nearly forty thousand deaths. Every article must present data in context.

More new gun control legislation

Re “Bill would make gun owners buy coverage for their weapons” (June 17):

Two more bills have surfaced to “fix the gun problem.” SB 505 will force gun owners to buy liability insurance for accidental or negligent use of their firearms. There are several problems with this. No insurance company in their right minds would ever issue such a policy. And if the gun was stolen and used how would the rightful owner prove that? In the end, if it passed, it would require the state government to carry the insurance, creating another costly department and yet more infringements on Second Amendment rights. AB 1227 would impose an additional 10% excise tax on firearm and ammunition sales and direct the funds (estimated at $118 million) to be used by another state committee toward “gun violence prevention programs.” In each case, these laws will punish gun owners and potential gun owners for owning guns, rather than addressing the problem of making criminals who use guns subject to serious prison time and personal liability for their crimes. Please notify your state senator and representative to vote no on these further infringements on our personal rights.

— Hayden Lening, Claremont

California needs new  leadership

Re “Dems in risky bet to aid GOP extremists” (June 17):

As I read sthat there are Democrats promoting far-right candidates so they can potentially set themselves up against an opponent in November who might be easier to defeat, I wonder, will we ever again be able to have faith that those in elected office will work to serve citizens in a manner that most benefits those citizens, rather than dedicate all their energies to simply being re-elected? Conversely, will voters at large ever take seriously unearthing the most qualified candidate rather than merely vote for their party’s choice? Here in California, Democratic leadership has turned our state into a wasteland of problems, high taxes, rampant homelessness, out-of-control housing and border control problems, ceaseless over-regulation and folks continue re-electing the same people with the same flawed policy ideas. These two major problems go hand-in-hand, and it’s disheartening.

— Bob Cunningham, Cherry Valley

Jan. 6 riot

Re “Are you watching the House hearings” (June 14):

I have been watching and hope people who have believed Trump’s lies are watching also. I am proud of Liz Cheney and feel she represents the kind of Republican Party I agree with.

I think the Proud Boys were emboldened by Trumps call to stop the verification of the election. I liked a lot of the changes Trump made when he was in office concerning trying to make us less dependent on foreign oil, the Supreme Court appointees, and less power to agencies hindering business. However, I do not want him to run again because of what happened on Jan. 6. The events of Jan. 6 are inconsistent with the peaceful transfer of power our nation must have.

— Betty Addink, Riverside

Two actors from the Netflix series “The Chosen One” were killed, and six other people were injured, in an automobile crash on Mexico’s Baja California Sur peninsula.

Actors Raymundo Garduño Cruz and Juan Francisco González Aguilar died in the accident on Thursday, Netflix said.

Two other cast members and four crew members were also injured but are in stable condition, according to the company.

Redrum, the production company behind “The Chosen One,” has temporarily halted work on the show.

Redrum didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. Netflix said the investigation into the crash is ongoing.

“The Chosen One” was filming in Baja California Sur in the Santa Rosalia area.

The accident happened when the group was in transit from Santa Rosalia to the local airport, according to Netflix.

“The Chosen One,” based on a comic-book series, is about a 12-year-old boy who learns he is the returned Jesus Christ, destined to save humankind.
