19 year-old driver arrested after hit-and-run, fatal auto-pedestrian crash - Salt Lake Tribune

rest.indah.link

A 19 year-old driver was arrested early Sunday morning after police say they were involved in a hit-and-run crash that was immediately followed by an auto-pedestrian crash that left a man dead.

Taylorsville Police tells FOX 13 News that the incident began shortly after 2:00 a.m., when officers were called to reports of a hit-and-run crash at a McDonald’s restaurant, located at 5400 South 3800 West.

A short time later, officers received a second call reporting an auto-pedestrian crash at 4900 South 4015 West that was later found to involve the same vehicle and driver. The 19 year-old driver stopped and attempted to aid the victim, a man between the ages of 35 and 40 who had been on the side of the road prior to the crash.

Auto Insurers Can Go With the Flo - The Wall Street Journal

Geico was overtaken not long ago by Progressive in the U.S. personal auto insurance market.Photo: Jonathan Weiss/Shutterstock

Those ubiquitous insurance ads, with characters like Progressive’s Flo, or Geico’s Gecko, were probably a bit harder to spot in 2023.

Home-and-auto insurers faced tough conditions as they worked to increase their rates to keep up with some fast-rising claim costs and cut back on

marketing spending. But with underwriting performance at Progressive steadying in the most recent reports, and inflation in auto-repair costs slowing but sticking around in car-insurance costs, it wouldn’t be a shock to see Flo a bit more in 2024—as well as flows into stocks such as Progressive.

The recent UAW strike has put another nail in the coffin of US auto producers - The Hill

rest.indah.link
The recent UAW strike has put another nail in the coffin of US auto producers | The Hill

The views expressed by contributors are their own and not the view of The Hill

The recent automotive strike raises concerns about the long-term viability of the U.S. auto industry. Teamwork is needed to maximize the supply chain surplus so everyone can have more, including labor. High morale is needed to foster cooperation required to increase productivity that increases the surplus. Blue collar workers proudly built this country and deserve a good wage, but as one of my superiors once said, “Every year everyone wants a raise. Every year our health care costs go up. Where is it going to come from? Productivity.”

Management is responsible for making productivity happen, but union bosses often oppose it because they view increased productivity as a vehicle for losing dues paying members: logic that is shortsighted. Productivity makes higher wages possible, increases competitiveness and raises our standard of living. Reduced competitiveness has been costing the Big Three automakers market share for decades.

After the recent, bitter strike, how much damage has been done to needed morale and labor/management cooperation at these organizations?

I’ve witnessed this before. The summer after my freshman year of college, 1978, was a time of stagflation and lowered expectations. I worked in McKeesport’s underground economy as a roofer for 15 cents an hour less than minimum wage. McKeesport was an impoverished mill town in the Monongahela Valley, then the largest steel producing area in the world. Powerful unions controlled a not insignificant portion of the above the table labor market. It offered few opportunities for low skilled, unconnected young people like myself. One day looking down from the roof I saw Andy, a former classmate, driving a brand-new Dodge Charger. I assumed Andy knew someone, because somehow, he got into the mill. Envious, I immediately questioned my own career decisions.

Over 5,000 people worked at US Steel’s National Tube Works in McKeesport, at one time the largest mill in the world. Unions were influential and controlled much of the Pittsburgh area’s political machine. They were also militant, often going on strike. My stepfather had left the mill because he was exhausted from constant strikes and lay-offs. He made less, but preferred the steady paycheck.

Unions kept member wages and benefits artificially high — higher wages without increased productivity — by limiting the labor pool, but also demanded restrictive work rules, created supply chain disruptions and shepherded legislation that reduced and restricted employment throughout the area. Nevertheless, there were benefits for those who could gain coveted membership in the union rank and file — especially the union bosses — until the mills began to close. Artificially high wages are sustainable in good times, but not during economic downturns. This made mills less competitive, while walkouts and restrictive work rules made them unprofitable. After 115 years National Tube closed permanently in 1987 following a crippling strike.

Recent UAW tactics, directed by activists who have never worked a day on an assembly line, took me back to McKeesport. The more than $10 billion lost during the strike, some of which could have gone to better wages, is forever lost. But union bosses think it was worth it because management capitulated and gave into the union’s demands. The new agreement makes wages, already 22 percent higher at the Big Three than their transplant counterparts and 47 percent higher than Tesla, even less competitive. Higher wages would be wonderful, and perfectly justified, if they were more productive, but they are not. It takes GM 29 hours to assemble a vehicle, while Toyota needs only 21. What’s worse, the cooperative environment needed to increase productivity has been poisoned by brutal strike tactics and trash talk.

It is easy to vilify employees and unions, but most quality problems and non-value-added work — waste — are the result of poorly designed processes, not worker behavior. Management is responsible for implementing good production processes that increase productivity, and improve working conditions and safety, and need employee expertise and input to improve them. Management is also responsible for fostering a respectful work environment conducive to high morale needed to induce cooperation. If there is a union that is making process improvement more difficult, management needs to ask what they had done to cause workers to feel they need union protections in the first place. Union bosses cannot be blamed for employees wanting representation, but unions add another layer of non-value-added costs because union bosses take a cut, but don’t produce any products. Management must create an environment where everyone is free to express ideas and make mistakes — and not feel they need a union to protect them from bad management.

Union reps regularly say their companies can’t close, that any suggestion that they could is just fearmongering. We used to say that in McKeesport too, but National Tube proved otherwise. The Dec. 18 announcement of the acquisition of US Steel by Nippon Steel, a competitor that didn’t even exist until US Steel had been around for seven decades, underscores the long fall of what in 1901 became the world’s first billion-dollar company, to world’s 24th largest steel producer.

I moved on from that roofing job, graduated college and did well, so my career decisions weren’t that bad after all. Nevertheless, I’ve often wondered what happened to Andy after the mill closed. This summer I bought my own Dodge, a “Last Call” Challenger. Sadly, I fear Dodge’s marketers never considered the strike and didn’t recognize the ominous irony of that name. I hope I’m wrong.

The 2023 L.A. Auto Show roundup features new models from Toyota, Subaru and more - USA TODAY

rest.indah.link

Auto shows are back, baby! Well, not really, but the 2023 L.A. auto show proved more interesting than most recent examples — we're looking at you, sad-sack Detroit auto show — if not as loaded with jaw-dropping debuts like last month's Japan Mobility Show, formerly known as the Tokyo Motor Show. Whatever the epicness level of this show, there were several new car and SUV reveals worthy of your attention in L.A. You can check them out below:

2025 Genesis GV80 and GV80 Coupe

The 2024 Genesis GV80 Coupe

You might not immediately be able to pick out what, exactly, is new about the 2025 Genesis GV80 luxury SUV, but the new Coupe version — a more stylish, swoopier take on the more upright, traditionally arranged GV80 — should stand out easily. Genesis sprinkles some extra specialness on the GV80 Coupe with an available electric-supercharged and twin-turbocharged V-6 you can't get on the regular GV80, along with the requisite fastback roofline for taking on the likes of BMW's X6, Mercedes-Benz's GLE Coupe, and other coupe-SUVs. We've covered the rest of the GV80's updates here.

2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N

The 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N

We've seen Hyundai's Ioniq 5 N before, but the L.A. auto show marks its first American auto show debut. Hyundai didn't simply rip the cover off a car we'd already seen, though — it dropped a plethora of new, U.S.-market-specific details and features to expect on this electric hot hatchback (okay, SUV) when it goes on sale next year. You can see every new Ioniq 5 N specification here.

2024 Hyundai Santa Fe

The 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe

The Ioniq 5 N isn't the only new Hyundai having its second debut (but its first U.S. debut) in L.A. The all-new Santa Fe SUV also made its North American splash at the show, and like with the Ioniq, Hyundai dumped a ton of market-specific information and specifications on us, including a peek at the new XRT off-road trim (pictured). This is a seriously cool-looking three-row crossover, and it stands to give Hyundai a raging SUV success story like its corporate sibling Kia's had recently with its larger Telluride. You can soak up all the new 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe info here.

2024 Hyundai Santa Fe:A first look at the newest updates for 2024

2024 Kia Sorento X-Pro

The 2024 Kia Sorento X-Pro

Okay, clearly the L.A. show provided the venue for Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis—all sharing a corporate umbrella — to parade some previously shown global products in front of Americans for the first time in person, because the refreshed Kia Sorento also made its North American debut here. There was a true first reveal stirred in, though: The new 2024 Kia Sorento X-Pro model, an off-road-focused variant that'll follow in the beefier-tires-and-lifted-suspension treadpaths of the larger Telluride X-Pro introduced last year. For more on the X-Pro and the 2024 Kia Sorento lineup broadly, head here.

2025 Lucid Gravity SUV

The 2024 Lucid Gravity

Lucid's groundbreaking Air sedan recalibrated expectations of the kind of driving range EVs could deliver, and its clever engineering and staggering efficiency (not to mention its packaging, looks, and tech) won over our Car of the Year judges two years ago. Yet for as praiseworthy as the Air is, it remains a four-door sedan — and if Lucid has any shot of a big break into the American car industry, it's with a more sales-friendly SUV. Enter the Gravity, a taller, more marketable Lucid blending tech from the Air with more utility. Lucid promises more than 440 miles of range, quick charge times, and more — and you can read all about how it'll take on Tesla's Model X and Rivian's R1S here.

2025 Subaru Forester

The 2024 Subaru Forester

Subaru Foresters might fade into the background of America's automotive landscape, but this right-size two-row SUV has plenty of ardent fans. All-new for 2025, the Forester keeps those features its followers love — namely its control-tower visibility and generous glass area, tall seating height, and usefully boxy shape — and lathers on more style than any Forester's worn, ever. Whether that style is attractive is debatable, though like other Subarus, it's intentionally... odd, but this marks a careful, successful step forward for the Forester. Read more on the updated Subaru Forester here.

2025 Toyota Crown Signia

The 2025 Toyota Crown Signia

Toyota's oddball Crown sedan — a sort of lifted, four-door, three-box crossover — is joined by an actual, conventionally styled Crown SUV: The Crown Signia. This upscale two-row crossover is, like the Crown sedan, a hybrid-only affair. It's sized somewhat close to Lexus's RX, like a RAV4-plus, and will replace the recently resurrected, hybrid-only, but smaller Venza in Toyota's lineup. Read more on the second member of the Crown family here.

2024 MotorTrend Car of the Year:The Toyota Prius takes top honors

2025 Toyota Camry

The 2024 Toyota Camry

If the L.A. show had a headliner this year, the newest Toyota Camry was it. Cars may be on the decline, but midsize sedans continue to reap plenty of rewards for Toyota and Honda, not to mention Nissan, Hyundai, and Kia, the only other makers still playing in that segment. That makes the redesigned Camry a very big deal, and even though it technically broke cover at an offsite event just before the actual auto show, the show floor is where the new four-door made its first public appearance. The new Camry goes to an all-hybrid lineup, and you can read all about its myriad upgrades inside and out here.

MotorTrend's 2024 Car of the Year

The 2024 Genesis GV80 Coupe

Not to toot our own horns, but we also had a debut at the L.A. show: Our 2024 Car of the Year, which we awarded to the new Toyota Prius hybrid and Prius Prime plug-in hybrid. We typically unveil our choice for Car of the Year at or around the L.A. show every year, and we were excited to announce the radically redesigned Prius as our pick. This is unlike any Prius that's come before, with genuinely desire-stirring looks, athletic handling, and — get this — satisfying power. Oh, despite being quicker than ever, it also is the most efficient Prius yet. Read more about this year's Car of the Year process, including our contenders, finalists, and finally, our winner here.

Cox Automotive Forecast: U.S. Auto Sales Expected to Finish 2023 Up More Than 11% Year Over Year, as General ... - Cox Automotive

rest.indah.link

ATLANTA, Dec. 27, 2023 – December new-vehicle sales, announced next week, are expected to show gains over last year’s product-constrained market. According to the Cox Automotive forecast released today, sales volume this month is expected to rise 6.2% over December 2022. The seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR), or sales pace, is expected to finish near 15.1 million in December. This SAAR is 1.6 million higher compared to last year’s pace. However, it reflects a slight decline from last month’s 15.3 million level and matches the lowest SAAR of the year, which was recorded in May.

According to Charlie Chesbrough, senior economist at Cox Automotive: “December is generally a strong month for new-vehicle sales as holiday shoppers look for year-end deals, and this year will be no exception. With supply much higher now and incentives higher as well, this December is expected to finish significantly better than last year. But high vehicle prices and high interest rates remain the industry’s Grinch right now, and that trend will continue into next year.”

2023: A Surprisingly Strong Sales Year

New-vehicle sales have been stronger and more consistent than expected throughout 2023. The new-vehicle market has been supported by growing deliveries, improving supply levels and higher incentives. Full-year 2023 U.S. auto sales, based on vehicle counts by Kelley Blue Book, are forecast to finish near 15.5 million units, an increase of 11.6% from 13.9 million in 2022 and ahead of Cox Automotive’s forecast from one year ago.

Large year-over-year gains in 2023 have been delivered by Honda, Nissan, General Motors and Tesla. The Hyundai Motor Group, with Genesis, Hyundai, and Kia brands, had a strong year in the U.S. market, growing sales by more than 12% and passing Stellantis – maker of Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Chrysler and other brands – to take the fourth spot in overall U.S. sales, behind Ford. Of all major automakers, Stellantis is the only one expected to post lower year-over-year sales, as the company pursues a strategy of lower volume and higher revenue per sales.

Higher New-Vehicle Inventory Levels and Strong Fleet Activity Support Improved Sales Pace

New-vehicle inventory volume was 2.56 million at the start of December, higher by more than 900,000 units from one year ago. Meanwhile, days’ supply had climbed to 71, up from 60 at the start of November and more than 17 days higher than December 2022. At the beginning of December, new-vehicle days’ supply is closer to the pre-pandemic norm than in the last several years.

Fleet sales are expected to rise in December after experiencing two months of pull-back in commercial and rental vehicle sales. The lower fleet volume was particularly affected by big drops in fleet sales from the Detroit Three due to the UAW strike.

Chesbrough notes: “With the strike now in the rearview mirror, December is expected to show a return to stronger fleet activity, and these sales could have a big impact on the month’s final tally.”

December 2023 New-Vehicle Sales Forecast

Full-Year 2022 U.S. New-Vehicle Sales Forecast Highlights

  • New-vehicle sales are forecast to increase 11.6% in 2023, reaching 15.5 million units.
  • New auto sales in Q4 will be down 4.2% compared to Q4 2022.
  • GM retains the sales title over Toyota in 2023 while Hyundai Motor Group jumps past Stellantis; Honda sees the largest year-over-year sales increase of the major manufacturers.

Full-Year 2023 New-Vehicle Sales Forecast

All percentages are based on raw volume, not daily selling rate. There were 27 selling days in both December 2023 and December 2022, while there were 25 selling days in November 2023.

Forecast: 2024

As the auto market drives into 2024, the Cox Automotive Economic and Industry Insights team anticipates weak economic growth, higher new-vehicle inventories, and an end to the seller’s market. Overall, the team expects 2024 to be the best year for car buyers since the pandemic. Last week, Cox Automotive Chief Economist Jonathan Smoke shared his team’s expectations for the U.S. automotive market in the year ahead. Forecast: 2024 outlines five themes expected to shape the automotive industry in the coming year.

The nagging problem of Baltimore's auto theft crisis - Fox Baltimore

rest.indah.link

The crisis of cars being stolen in the Baltimore region has been a constant headline for several months.

According to data from the Baltimore Police Department, at least 10,766 auto thefts have been reported since Jan. 1.

“It's not a matter of if my car will be stolen,” Arch McKown, Safety Chairperson of the Patterson Park Neighborhood Association, told FOX45 News in July.“It's when ... Your car likely will be stolen if you park it in a public place here in Baltimore City if it’s a Hyundai or a Kia.”

Over the summer, McKown was one of the first to be outspoken over the growing problem of auto thefts in Baltimore.

“It’s a serious public safety hazard,” the chairperson said. “Because these cars, they’re stolen. Usually, it's juveniles who are doing it.”

In the weeks and months that followed, auto theft victims continued to come forward to share their stories with FOX45 News.

Andi Jarvis said her car was stolen from outside her home and later turned up in White Marsh.

“I have no idea who took it,” Jarvis told FOX45 News in September. “I have no idea what happened to the people that took it. Nothing.”

Headlines also soon reported that when it came to auto thefts, juvenile suspects were tough to hold accountable.

“It's very frustrating,” Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates said in August. “You have officers doing their job, risking their life. You have victims who struggle to make the car payments, struggle to pay their insurance, doing what they can, and here comes a young kid – a child – stealing their car because it’s a game. They think the system will hold that child accountable but it's not happening.”

Some of the thieves were so brazen this year, they appeared undeterred by the watchful eye of surveillance.

When a car was stolen from FOX45’s parking lot overnight, the whole thing was caught on camera.

In September, a Baltimore County woman told FOX45 News she had to pay two city speeding tickets racked up by the suspects who stole her car.

“They said it probably happened while it was stolen,” Cindy Garofalo said. “They told me that. And I said, ‘Well, why should I have to pay for it?’ And they said, ‘Well, we’re not gonna release your car unless you pay the two speeding tickets.'”

FOX45’s drone captured an aerial view of the cars sitting inside the city impound lot.

At the time video was recorded in October, data from Baltimore City revealed nearly 20% of the cars inside the impound lot were previously stolen.

In November, Mayor Brandon Scott and Police Commissioner Richard Worley announced a 166% increase in juvenile auto thefts this year.

Baltimore City surpassed the milestone of 10,000 auto thefts in a calendar year by the end of November.

At the current rate, Baltimore is on pace to record more than 11,000 total auto thefts during 2023.

Fans recreate the GTA 6 trailer in GTA 6, Fortnite, Minecraft, and more - Polygon

rest.indah.link

It’s been three weeks and change since Rockstar Games played Santa Claus by giving everyone their first look at Grand Theft Auto 6 ahead of its vague 2025 release date. In that time, thirsty fans have watched the record-setting trailer more than 160 million times, which was apparently more than enough research to recreate the video in just about every game, style, and format under the sun.

Let’s start with a few no-brainers: Grand Theft Auto 6 recreated in previous Grand Theft Auto games.

RavenwestR1 used various mods to replicate every major scene from the trailer in Grand Theft Auto 5. I particularly enjoy Michael de Santa, Franklin Clinton, and Trevor Philips making cameos as random denizens of Vice City.

What if Grand Theft Auto 6 took place in Liberty City and starred Grand Theft Auto 4 protagonist Niko Bellic? It might look something like this:

And finally, someone reimagined Grand Theft Auto 6 as my personal favorite game in the series, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Grand Theft Auto sister series Red Dead Redemption 2 also got in on the fun, but I couldn’t pick a favorite.

At its prime, the Saints Row series was Grand Theft Auto’s most popular and successful competitor, so on some level it only makes sense to recreate the Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer using Saints Row 2.

The possibilities are endless from there. Fortnite? Sure!

Minecraft? Why not!

The Sims 4? Okay!

Garry’s Mod? It’s an older meme, but it checks out.

The most impressive, however, is arguably Grand Theft Auto 6 made in actual Lego, stop-motion style.

Being an old, I’m also partial to folks transporting Grand Theft Auto 6 back in time using, for example, graphics modeled after the original PlayStation…

…playing the trailer through an early 2000s CRT television…

…and dreaming up a retro-futuristic world where the far-off game was somehow released in 1956.

And finally, I can’t not shout out this trailer made entirely of stock footage, which creator Simply said was “surprisingly easy.”

It’s amusing how recognizable the Grand Theft Auto 6 reveal’s format and rhythm has become online despite the relatively short time it’s been around, but I guess this is just another testament to how fast the internet moves these days. And if nothing else, at least a whole new generation is learning to appreciate the music of Tom Petty, which is always a win in my book.

Florida Joker Gives 'Final Warning' To Rockstar Over Grand Theft Auto 6 - GameRant

rest.indah.link

Highlights

  • Lawrence Sullivan, known as the "Florida Joker," demands money from Rockstar Games, claiming they stole his likeness for a character in Grand Theft Auto 6.
  • Despite the character not being an exact match, Sullivan continues making legal demands and has dyed his hair to match the character.
  • Sullivan is asking for $5 million.

Lawrence Sullivan, known to the public as the “Florida Joker,” has just given one last ultimatum to Rockstar Games over Grand Theft Auto 6. The highly-anticipated trailer for Rockstar’s latest open-world crime title sent shockwaves across the internet when it was finally released earlier this month, with eagle-eyed fans quickly pointing out references to real-life people and events within Grand Theft Auto 6’s Florida-inspired Leonida setting. One such character is a tattooed criminal being arrested during the GTA 6 trailer, who was soon compared to Lawrence Sullivan’s viral 2017 mugshot.

Sullivan himself took note of the Grand Theft Auto 6 character’s resemblance to him, and soon posted a video claiming that he and Rockstar “needed to talk” over the developer allegedly "stealing" his likeness. Despite the NPC in question not being an exact match for the Florida Joker and discouraging remarks from onlookers like Red Dead Redemption 2 actor Rodger Clark, Sullivan has continued making legal demands as the weeks go on, even going as far as dyeing his hair purple to match the Grand Theft Auto 6 character he says is modeled after him. In a more recent video, Sullivan claimed that he has contacted his lawyers in preparation to sue Rockstar.

Lawrence Sullivan, the Florida Joker Man, makes a demand from Rockstar Games after changing his hair color to mirror his alleged GTA counterpart.

Over the holiday weekend, Lawrence Sullivan posted yet another video on his TikTok account demanding money from Rockstar, with this one supposedly being the “final warning” before he and his legal team take action against the company. Sullivan claims that his lawyers sent a letter to Rockstar, and that they are expecting a response by Sullivan’s birthday on January 11. He also continues his past claims that he is being harassed over his alleged GTA 6 parody, and that he is now asking for $5 million to avoid the legal action he has been threatening over the past month.

grand theft auto 6 promo art logoless

As many have pointed out, this is far from the first time a public figure threatened to sue Rockstar over a character supposedly modeled after them. In 2014, Lindsay Lohan claimed that the developer stole her likeness for Grand Theft Auto 5 character Lacey Jonas, but her case was eventually dropped in 2018. Lawrence Sullivan himself referenced this case during his own complaints against Rockstar, arguing that he actually has “hard evidence” that the Joker-like character in the GTA 6 trailer is inspired by his infamous mugshot.

So far, this “hard evidence” basically amounts to Lawrence Sullivan comparing himself to screenshots of the Grand Theft Auto 6 character in question, whose tattoos are noticeably different from the ones on Sullivan’s face - with a prime example being the word “IMPERTINENT” across the NPC’s forehead. Due to both this and Rockstar’s considerable experience with these kinds of legal matters, Sullivan likely won’t win any legal actions he might choose to take if the developer doesn’t respond to his “final warning” by January 11.

Grand Theft Auto comes to life in Oakland - Washington Examiner

rest.indah.link

It should be a scene restricted to video game fantasy, not real life: a Dodge Charger, a Cadillac, and a Jeep Grand Cherokee, all with gunmen blasting semi-automatic weapons, chasing a small Honda Accord through the downtown of a major American city.

Except this wasn’t Grand Theft Auto. This was just another Friday morning in Oakland, California.

IRAQ ATTACK UNDERSCORES DAMAGE OF AFGHANISTAN WITHDRAWAL

The drama began just after dawn at an average strip mall a few miles away when the driver of the Accord arrived at his Chinese restaurant to begin prepping for the day. Security cameras show the other cars entering the parking lot and boxing the Accord in.

But the Accord manages to outmaneuver the assailants and take off down Lakeshore Avenue. The other cars then pursue the Accord, with passengers firing guns at it. The pursuing cars then began ramming the Accord, causing it to crash into a light pole and flip over next to Oakland’s iconic Lake Merritt.

Stunned in his upside-down car, the victim had little time to compose himself before the assailants got out of their cars, semi-automatic weapons drawn, and proceeded to rob the driver of his cash and a small handgun. The assailants made no effort to provide medical care to their victim.

"It is getting bolder and bolder every day,” another business owner told NBC News. “Out there, the mentality is, Asians got cash. No, not every Asian carrying cash. Yet we’re being targeted and it’s unfair. It’s really unfair. We live, we work here, we try to make a living. But it happens on a weekly basis.”

It is unfair. Asians should not be the regular targets of armed robberies. No one should.

Unfortunately, if they want change, Oakland residents will have to stop voting for Democratic mayors and district attorneys who prioritize social justice over law and order.

Elon Musk's Tesla Is Losing EV Race to China's BYD - Bloomberg

rest.indah.link

China’s BYD Co. bills itself as the biggest car brand you’ve never heard of. It might need a different tagline soon.

The automaker is poised to surpass Tesla Inc. as the new worldwide leader in fully electric vehicle sales. When it does — likely in the current quarter — it will be both a symbolic turning point for the EV market and further confirmation of China’s growing clout in the global automotive industry.

More auto buyers turning to hybrids as sales of EVs slow - Honolulu Star-Advertiser

rest.indah.link

DETROIT >> America’s automakers have staked their futures on the notion that electric vehicles will dominate sales in the coming years, spurred by buyers determined to reduce carbon emissions and save on fuel.

But so far, while EV sales are growing, their pace is falling well short of the industry’s ambitious timetable for transitioning away from combustion engines. Instead, buyers are increasingly embracing a quarter-century-old technology whose popularity has been surging: The gas-electric hybrid, which alternates from gas to battery power to maximize efficiency.

So far in 2023, Americans have bought a record 1 million-plus hybrids — up 76% from the same period last year, according to Edmunds.com. As recently as last year, purchases had fallen below 2021’s total. This year’s figures don’t even include sales of 148,000 plug-in hybrids, which drive a short distance on battery power before a gas-electric system kicks in.

Though electric vehicle sales are nearing an annual record of over 1 million this year, their year-over-year growth rate has begun to stall. EVs still account for only about 7% of all U.S. auto sales.

The slowdown has raised concern among automakers that buyer interest in EVs is faltering. Some companies are cutting production and scaling down plans for new battery or assembly plants.

The reasons why hybrids have quickly become the preferred choice for many buyers vary. They range from the higher prices of comparable EVs to concern about the scarcity of charging stations to a recognition that hybrids provide many of the same advantages without the hassles of EVs.

Ford, the nation’s No. 2 hybrid seller behind Toyota, expects to produce enough hybrids to quadruple sales within five years. General Motors, which abandoned most hybrids in the U.S. four years ago in favor of EVs, now says it’s considering bringing them back.

In the meantime, surveys show that consumers remain uneasy about either the availability of charging stations or the sale prices of EVs — even factoring in tax credits that the federal government makes available for EV purchases in many cases.

“Your standard hybrid makes the most sense to most people,” said Ivan Drury, a director at the Edmunds.com auto website. “I think you’ll find that people don’t want to deal with the hassle or the difficulties of charging.”

Hybrids do emit some tailpipe pollution. But because they burn less fuel than autos equipped solely with gasoline engines, their emissions are less. What’s more, purchase prices for hybrids are akin to those of gas vehicles and typically far less than for comparable EVs.

“People are perfectly fine with a car that gets 45 or 50 miles per gallon, and you don’t have to do anything” different from current behavior, said Scott Adams, owner of a Toyota dealership in suburban Kansas City.

Here are some key reasons why hybrids, which use both a gas engine and battery power to efficiently turn the wheels, have taken off this year:

SAVING THE PLANET

The proliferation of wildfires, heat waves and more intense storms has led more people to view climate change as a grave crisis, one they can help mitigate by burning less carbon-spewing fuel. Yet even among those people, some remain skeptical that an electric vehicle will allow them to travel long distances or tow trailers.

“People want to participate in this — the idea of reducing carbon,” said Jack Hollis, who heads North American sales and marketing for Toyota, which leads in hybrid sales and has moved only gradually toward EVs. “I think the hybrid gives them what they’re most looking for.”

A LOWER PRICE

EV prices have been dropping, mainly as a consequence of federal tax credits and price cuts by Tesla, the market leader. Yet they’re still pricier than hybrids or gas vehicles

After peaking at nearly $63,000 last year, the average EV sale price fell to just over $60,500 in November, not including tax credits or prices from Tesla, which doesn’t release them. Fewer EVs, though, will likely qualify for the tax credits in 2024 because of rules that will limit buyers from claiming a full credit if they purchase cars with battery materials from China or other countries that are considered hostile to the United States.

The average price of a hybrid has stabilized at roughly $42,000. A typical hybrid costs somewhat more than its gasoline counterpart. A Toyota RAV4 hybrid with all-wheel-drive, for example, starts at $32,825, $1,600 more than a comparable gas version.

Like many hybrid buyers, Shalinder Singh, an Uber driver from Sunnyvale, California, said that for him, the gas savings helped tip the price equation in favor of a 2024 Honda CR-V hybrid over the corresponding gasoline model.

“The mileage for the hybrid is too good,” said Singh, who makes frequent trips to San Francisco and San Jose.

The Environmental Protection Agency says a front-wheel-drive CR-V Hybrid gets 40 mpg in city and highway driving, 10 mpg better than the gas version. The owner of a hybrid CR-V who drives 15,000 miles annually would save $450 a year on fuel over the gas model.

LIFESTYLE NEEDS

Angie Rodesky, who recently moved to Jefferson City, Missouri, said her children wanted her to buy a Tesla to replace her old vehicle. Though she did consider an EV to help reduce emissions, she settled on a RAV4 hybrid because she travels frequently to see children in Florida and Delaware.

“I have a fear of plugging something in and not being able to travel as far, because it’s a 16-hour road trip from Delaware to Missouri,” Rodesky, 55, said. “I needed to make sure I had a vehicle that was comfortable to ride in and had good gas mileage.”

After buying a 2023 model from Adams Toyota near Kansas City, she had to wait a month for it to arrive, mainly because of heavy customer demand for the vehicle.

Brad Sowers, owner of Jim Butler Kia and other St. Louis-area dealerships, said customers who consider EVs often ask for hybrids or other alternatives.

“They look at it as a baby step into the EV world,” Sowers said. “They’re saying to themselves, ‘I can’t really do 100% battery psychologically.’ “

COLDER WEATHER

Dealers say many hybrid buyers appear to have done research and know that cold weather reduces the range of an EV battery. Tests conducted in Norway, where nearly 80% of new vehicles are electric, found that EVs lose between 10% and 36% of their range during winter.

Most U.S. EV purchases occur on the coasts, where charging stations are more prevalent and weather is often warmer. In the Midwest, where stations are farther apart, Sowers said consumers worry about decreased wintertime range.

“It’s cold here,” he said. “The (charging) infrastructure isn’t that great.”

RELIABILITY

In its auto reliability survey this year, Consumer Reports found that hybrids were the industry’s most reliable type of power system. Electric vehicles were least reliable. EVs contain glitch-prone new technology, Consumer Reports said. Hybrids have less.

And with hybrids having been sold in the United States for more than two decades, automakers have had time to refine the vehicles’ engineering and construction. In general, vehicles that have been manufactured for longer periods are more reliable, said Jake Fisher, senior director of auto testing at Consumer Reports.

Analysts say they still think more EVs than hybrids will eventually be sold in the United States. With government help, the industry is moving to build many more charging stations. Ford, GM, Hyundai and others have reached agreements for owners of their vehicles to charge them at many of Tesla’s widespread stations. The industry is standardizing its plugs to match Tesla’s.

With direct-current fast chargers, charging times are becoming faster. Battery technology will likely improve cold-weather range, too.

In addition, next year, EVs’ tax credits will be counted at the time of sale, thereby reducing the price and easing monthly payments. This year, buyers had to wait for income tax returns to receive their money. In addition, over time, tighter fuel economy and pollution regulations will likely compel automakers to sell more EVs.
