L.A. auto show: Toyota, Hyundai, Genesis EVs, hybrids on tap - Automotive News

The Los Angeles Auto Show will be a springboard for an array of electrified vehicles.

Hyundai, Genesis and Toyota are expected to showcase battery-electric or hybrid models in the nation's largest EV market with several North American debuts. Lucid Motors, the California-based EV maker, and VinFast, a Singapore automaker, will each show battery EVs.

Fiat, a brand that has been limping along with just one U.S. nameplate, is stepping into the spotlight with a new product announcement for North America, though it didn't reveal details last week.

Show organizers said Porsche, Toyota and Volkswagen are hosting their own gatherings around the city in the days leading up to the event for electric, hybrid and gas models this week. Lucid is showing its electric Air Pure sedan at an online event Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Jessica Caldwell, executive director of insights for Edmunds, said California's aggressive EV sales targets make the show a natural fit for eco-friendly products. The state is aiming for 35 percent of new-vehicle sales to be zero-emission models by 2026, 68 percent by 2030 and 100 percent by 2035.

"I think the auto show gives consumers that opportunity to be like, 'What is my reality? What am I looking at here?,' " Caldwell told Automotive News. "Because if I am in market in the next few years, it's like, 'Well, I'm going to be forced to buy one anyways, this is the way things are going. Should I be considering one now, rather than in 10 years?' "

Here's what's expected to be at the show, which opens to the public after the media preview on Thursday, Nov. 17.

Genesis: The luxury brand is showcasing its Electrified GV70 to the public for the first time. Genesis also is debuting a "global concept" vehicle.

Hyundai: The Korean automaker is revealing the North American version of its Ioniq 6. The battery-electric sedan is Hyundai's second dedicated EV planned for 2024. It's built on the company's E-GMP architecture and has sleek "streamliner" styling that's both upscale and aerodynamic. Hyundai says having a platform built specifically for EVs means it can design vehicles to better meet specific lifestyle needs. In addition to providing transportation, the Ioniq 6 is designed to be used as a portable workspace or power source for small appliances.

Kia: Kia is showing its 2024 Seltos subcompact crossover with a powertrain change, possibly a conventional hybrid.

Lucid: Lucid is launching a less expensive version of its Air sedan at an online event. Available for pre-order since last year, the Air Pure starts at $89,050 with shipping. It will allow the sedan to better compete with the Tesla Model S that starts at $106,440 and the Mercedes EQS starting at $105,550.

Porsche: Porsche plans to unwrap a rally-bred version of the venerable 911. The long-rumored 911 Dakar, celebrating Porsche's vaunted rally racing pedigree, features a newly calibrated all-wheel-drive system, more ground clearance than the standard 911, a rugged front fascia and all-terrain tires.

Subaru: Subaru is unveiling its redesigned Impreza hatchback, expected to feature sportier styling and powertrain upgrades. It is also expected that this marks the end of the Impreza sedan.

Toyota: Toyota is showing its new Prius sedan, featuring not only the brand's fifth-generation hybrid system for improved efficiency, but new styling that aims to shed the segment pioneer's curious egg-shaped design and look more like a modern sedan.

VinFast: The automaker is introducing two new crossovers — the VF 6 and VF 7. It teased the models at CES in Las Vegas in January, but the L.A. show will be the first time they are presented with additional details.

Carly Schaffner and Larry P. Vellequette contributed to this report.
