CHICO — As they sat behind Jim Schindler’s 1938 Cadillac and Jay McQuiston’s 1950s Chevrolet, a group of friends laughed, talked and sipped coffee Saturday morning.
They were a few of the more than 100 drivers who packed the parking lot Saturday at the Starbucks on Forest Avenue and East 20th Street for the Cars and Coffee meetup.
“There are more people here than sometimes the local car shows,” Sal Villegas said. “I really look forward to it.”
“It’s early in the day — not all day — and it’s free,” Janelle Schindler said.
The parking spaces were filling up at 8 a.m., when the meetup started, and the Starbucks line was busy.
Warm weather is a factor for the turnout, but Janelle Schindler said even the meetups in the winter can bring out car enthusiasts.
“Last December was one of the biggest ones ever,” she said.
On the other hand, if it rains, few people are willing to show up, but McQuiston said he always shows up, even in nasty weather.
“I’ve been here when it’s just me and maybe one other person,” he said.
Zach Sciacca said and his friends come to the event posted on the Facebook community Chico Cars and Coffee to show off their cars, see other cars and promote their own car event “Drift Apocalypse” at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willows.
“It’s a good time to be out and about, and you get to see people’s life’s loves,” Jody Allard said as she and her friends checked out a dune buggy and sipped drinks. “They pour everything into these babies.”
Sciacca said he drove his Infinity G35.
What’s nice about the Cars and Coffee meetup is that “multiple generations come to this — our parents, grandparents and us. There’s not too many imports, but we bring a few,” Kenny Allard said. “You’ve got to get here early to get your spot.”
In another aisle, Sean Brown showed admirers the work he has done under the hood of his 1973 Datsun 240Z.
He said he learned how to do everything by watching YouTube instructional videos, and has been working to restore the car for about 2 years.
“It’s a big ol’ money pit for me,” Brown said.
Cars and Coffee is every first Saturday of the month from 8 a.m. to about 10 a.m. at 2009 Forest Ave. in Chico. Visit the Facebook page community at www.facebook.com/chicooctaneandcaffeine for more information.
