President Joe Biden is coming to Michigan next week for the North American International Detroit Auto Show, according to White House officials.
Biden will attend the show on Wednesday, Sept. 14, which is Media Day and the first of two Industry Tech Days.
The show is open to the public Sept. 17 to 25, with adult tickets selling for $20.
Biden will be the first sitting president to attend the Detroit auto show since Barack Obama did so in 2016. Biden attended the event as vice president in 2014 and 2017.
The president was asked Friday about possibly attending the show.
“I’ll be there,” Biden said.” I’m a car guy, as you’ve kind of noticed.”
The event is back in Detroit for the first time since January 2019. Organizers had planned to move the event to the summer in 2020, but it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2021 event was modified and billed as “Motorbella,” and was outdoors at Pontiac’s M1 Concourse.
The Detroit auto show topped 800,000 visitors during most of the 2010s, but organizers aimed for just 150,000 at last year’s event.
Organizers are targeting 400,000 people this year as the event returns to Huntington Place (formerly named Cobo Hall). But the show also has many outdoor components this year at Hart Plaza, Spirit Plaza, Campus Martius and other areas in downtown Detroit.
Biden was supposed to visit Saginaw County in August to talk about the recent passage of the CHIPS and Science Act — a $280 billion bill that aims to boost U.S. semiconductor chip manufacturing. But he had to cancel, after testing positive for COVID.
Semiconductor chip shortages have spurred vehicle manufacturing delays, which led to this investment.

The president visited a Dearborn Ford plant in 2021, as the manufacturer unveiled its Ford Lightning electric truck. Biden even took a test drive, rolling down his window to tell reporters “this sucker’s quick,” before speeding off.
