A second-alarm fire that charred several auto-repair shops burned for hours Sunday morning, sending acrid smoke into the air that prompted evacuations at a nearby apartment complex, Vista fire officials said.
The blaze was first reported about 2 a.m. after someone said they saw a trash on fire in a business complex off North Santa Fe Avenue south of West Connecticut Avenue, said Vista fire Chief Ned Vander Pol. When firefighters arrived, they saw the fire had spread to a nearby building and called for more support.
It took about three-and-a-half hours to beat back the blaze, which seriously damaged three businesses: EMI Automotive, Humberto Palos Auto Repair and Mexicano Tires.
“There’s a lot of burn capability there,” Vander Pol said. “Everything from tires to vehicles, they can keep burning for a long time.”
The chief said the contents of the auto shops sent thick smoke into the sky that ultimately displaced three families from an apartment complex nearby. Although the fire did not damage the apartment building, the smoke was bad enough that the families sought shelter at a motel. The Red Cross will assist them.
Although an exact damage estimate was not immediately available, it was thought to be high enough to ask for assistance from the county’s Bomb/Arson Unit, which is tasked with handling more complicated fire investigations. It is unclear whether the fire was intentionally set.
No one was injured in the fire.
