Why grind herbs and spices using a mortar and pestle when a spice grinder is so much faster?
The aroma.
We were blown away by how much more fragrant our favorite chile-cumin-coriander blend was when ground using Zassenhaus Oval Cast Iron Mortar and Pestle (Gewurzmorser). And the pouring spout made getting our spices into a jar easy. The mortar is made of sold cast-iron and features a slightly rough surface. The pestle has a cast-iron rounded grinding end and a wood handle that screws on and is capped with a cast-iron end piece stamped with the Zassenhaus logo. The pestle's notable heft aids in grinding. The mortar's pour spout works great as a nest for the pestle when the tool is in storage.
The mortar bowl is small — about ¾ cup — so the tool isn't suitable for making a big batch of pesto. But its compact size makes it easy to store in a drawer or cabinet corner.
Hand wash only.
