Chinese EV stocks fall after Li Auto and Xpeng report plunge in August deliveries; Nio ekes out growth - CNBC

Nio managed to grow deliveries of its electric vehicles in August versus July. However, rivals Li Auto and Xpeng saw a sharp fall in deliveries. EV players continue to face supply chain disruptions for the resurgence of Covid in China as well as weaker consumer demand due to a difficult economic environment in the country.

Stocks of Chinese electric vehicle makers Nio, Li Auto and Xpeng fell in U.S. pre-market trade on Thursday after the latter two start-ups reported a sharp fall in August car deliveries.

Here are the August delivery numbers for the three companies:

  • Li Auto: Delivered 4,571 vehicles in August, down 56% versus July's number of 10,422 cars. That figure is also down 51% year-on-year.
  • Xpeng: Delivered 9,578 vehicles in August, down 16% versus July's number of 11,524 cars. However, that represents a 33% year-on-year rise.
  • Nio: Delivered 10,677 vehicles in August, up 6% versus July's number of 10,052 cars. That was also a 81.6% year-on-year rise.

Nio was the only company to grow on a monthly basis in August. U.S.-listed shares of all three carmakers were down around 2% in pre-market trade.

The Chinese economy is facing a number of challenges including a resurgence of Covid-19 that has seen major cities like Shanghai locked down. In the last few days Shenzhen, China's tech hub has enacted Covid restrictions and on Thursday, the mega city of Chengdu went into lockdown.

While some cities may have opened up again, consumer sentiment remains fragile and uncertainty prevails as a result of China's "zero-Covid" policy.

The world's second-largest economy is also facing a power crunch which is impacting electric vehicle charging stations. Last month, Tesla and Nio suspended some of their charging services.

These issues are filtering through to EV sales.

Bill Russo, CEO at Shanghai-based Automobility, told CNBC, the numbers are "reflective of lingering supply chain issues as well as the fact that they're on the premium end of the price range and with the weakening economy, people are looking toward affordability and that's squeezing some of the higher priced models."

Last month, Xpeng said it expects to deliver between 29,000 and 31,000 electric vehicles in the third quarter of the year. This guidance disappointed investors.

Xpeng President Brian Gu said the guidance reflects the fact that the industry is entering a "relatively slow season" and that traffic in stores is less due to the Covid situation.

Yanan Shen, president of Li Auto, said in an earnings call last month that the Covid outbreak "severely affected" the company's supply chains and that there are remaining "disruptions and difficulties."

Shen also said there had been a slowdown in order intake for its flagship Li ONE sports utility vehicle.

Li Auto began to deliver its new L9 car to customers at the end of August. And the company said it is planning to launch and deliver a large SUV called the Li L8 in early November. That could be affecting sales of its Li ONE, according to Russo.

"Li has major new product launches with the L9 and L8 which is also impacting consumer demand for Li ONE. When new products come out, demand for the older model often suffers," Russo said.

To spur demand, China said last month it would extend its tax exemption for new energy vehicle purchases until the end of 2023.

Competition continues to heat up in China's electric vehicle market. Alongside Li Auto's new cars, Xpeng plans to begin deliveries of its new G9 SUV in October and launch two new vehicles next year.

Detroit auto show preview - just-auto.com

It’s taken more than three and a half a years plus a couple of cancelled planned restarts but at long last, the North American International Auto Show is set to return.

Ford Motor Company intends to make the biggest splash and while many OEMs won’t be attending, there will be a good mix of brands, along with several world premieres.

Dodge

Many of Stellantis’ brands will have displays, including Ram, Chrysler, Alfa Romeo and Fiat but so far the only confirmed premieres are the Dodge Hornet plus the first two of seven Last Call editions for the marque’s two- and four-door muscle cars.

The new-for-2023 Charger Super Bee comes in two forms; as a Scat Pack (painted B5 Blue) and as a Scat Pack Widebody (Plum Crazy). Stellantis will build 500 of each.

Even though it will be 15 years young in January, still the Charger’s coupe equivalent powers on, Dodge also having just announced the 2023 Challenger Shakedown. There will be 1,000 examples of this car, each distinguished by red ‘392’ fender/front wing stickers, a ‘Shakedown’ spoiler graphic and stripe with red accent, red six-piston Brembo brakes, a ‘Shakedown’ IP badge, as well as Alcantara seats with red stitching.

The Hornet, a Compact SUV, was revealed to the media in August, the NAIAS being its public premiere. Aside from the front and rear ends, this SUV is all but identical to the Alfa Romeo Tonale. Production is in the same Italian plant (Giambattista Vico/Pomigliano d’Arco). The front- and all-wheel drive platform is SUSW.

As well as the standard 265 hp and 295 lb ft turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine for the Hornet GT, there is also a plug-in hybrid. This, the Hornet R/T, will have estimated outputs of 285+ hp (to be confirmed by the EPA) and 383 pound-feet of torque. Dodge calls a boost feature ‘PowerShot’. This allows an extra 25 horsepower to assist acceleration although the driver must wait fifteen seconds between each activation. The rear axle motor produces 90 kW and the battery has a capacity of 15.5 kWh.

The GT is due to reach US dealerships in late 2022 with the R/T following in March or April.

It’s already generated a lot of online publicity for the brand, so the Charger Daytona SRT concept should be a big drawcard at the show. The big coupe returns the Charger name to its two-door past but with the twist being that it’s an EV.

Ford

We still don’t know for sure if the on-off hybrid development programme really was cancelled but the S650 Mustang is definitely coming and will be powered by updated gasoline engines. Ford is yet to state if this will be a ’23 or ’24 model year car, calling it only the seventh generation Mustang.

Prototypes photographed on many occasions during 2022 appear to show a car which retains the general silhouette of the existing model. Production will remain at the Flat Rock factory in Michigan with both fastback (coupe) and convertible bodies again expected. Job 1 is believed to be on track for March. The platform is an update of CD6.

There will be updates to this article as more information becomes official.

Subaru

Given the importance of the USA to Subaru, a new XV (Crosstrek in its largest market) will likely be revealed at the show. Subaru Corporation says it will announce ‘a new SUV‘ at 14:00 JST on 15 September. Curiously, Subaru of America has made no equivalent statement to the media.

Chevrolet, Chrysler and Jeep also have scheduled press briefings but none has announced if this also means a vehicle world debut is being revealed.
