Apple Preparing 75 Million 5G iPhones Alongside New Watches and iPad - Yahoo Finance

rest.indah.link

(Bloomberg) -- Apple Inc. has asked suppliers to build at least 75 million 5G iPhones for later this year, roughly in line with last year’s launch, in a sign that demand for the company’s most important product is holding up in the midst of the global pandemic and recession.

The Cupertino, California-based technology giant anticipates shipments of these next-generation iPhones may reach as high as 80 million units in 2020, according to people familiar with the situation. Apple plans to launch four new models in October with fifth-generation wireless speeds, a different design and a wider choice of screen sizes, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing unannounced products.

Among a comprehensive product refresh in the fall, Apple is also preparing a new iPad Air with an edge-to-edge iPad Pro-like screen, two new Apple Watch versions and its first over-ear headphones outside the Beats brand. A smaller HomePod speaker is in the works, too. An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment.

Apple and its manufacturing partners always ramp up production ahead of the rollout of new iPhones each fall. In the summer of 2019, suppliers were preparing to make components for as many as 75 million handsets. The target in 2018 was similar, so this year’s goal of 75 million to 80 million units is a bullish sign. Key assembly partner Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., also known as Foxconn, has put up several notices on WeChat over the past month recruiting workers for its main iPhone campus in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou.

While the Covid-19 outbreak has hammered the global economy and disrupted supply chains, Apple is seeing strong demand for iPhones, iPads and Mac computers from people working and studying remotely. Revenue from iPhones crushed Wall Street expectations in the most recent quarter. The device still generates almost half of Apple’s sales, and that often tops 60% in the holiday season. Apple shares have soared 76% this year, making it the first U.S. company to surpass $2 trillion in market value.

The four new phones will be split into two basic and two high-end models for the first time, and all will feature OLED displays with improved color and clarity. The two regular iPhones will come in a new 5.4-inch size and a 6.1-inch option, while the Pro devices will offer a choice of a 6.1-inch or an enlarged 6.7-inch display, which will be the largest Apple’s ever put in an iPhone.

All of the new smartphones will have updated designs with squared edges similar to the iPad Pro, and the high-end phones will continue to use stainless steel edges versus aluminum sides on the cheaper variants. The company is also planning a dark blue color option on the Pro models to replace the Midnight Green of 2019’s iPhone 11 Pro line.

At least the larger of the Pro phones will have the same LIDAR camera as on the latest iPad Pro, which allows augmented-reality apps to have a greater understanding of their surrounding environment. Among the most significant improvements of the new handsets will be the new A14 processor, upgrading speed and power efficiency.

Some Apple employees testing the new devices think that the new 6.7-inch screen is one of this year’s most notable improvements, the people familiar with the situation said. A few testers have also found that some of the current 5G networks are not improving connection speeds much, the people added.

Apple plans to ship the lower-end phones sooner than the Pro devices, according to people familiar with the staggered release strategy. During a recent conference call, Apple said the new iPhones would ship a “few weeks” later than last year’s models, which started shipping Sept. 20. This year’s rollout is on course to be the latest since the release of the iPhone X in November 2017.

The design of this year’s iPhones and many features were finished before Covid-19 spread, but the pandemic did create issues for final testing and delayed the start of production by several weeks. While the new iPhones won’t ship until later, Apple’s iOS 14 software will arrive in September, the people said.

The new Apple Watch lineup will include a successor to the Apple Watch Series 5 and a replacement for the Series 3 that will compete with lower-cost fitness devices such as those from Fitbit Inc.

The smaller HomePod will help Apple renew its push into the smart home at a lower price, albeit with fewer speakers inside the device than the current $299 model. While the first HomePod was praised for its audio quality, consumers have panned its limited Siri functionality and price. Earlier this year, Apple merged some of the Apple TV and HomePod engineering teams as it looks to renew its focus on home devices.

Apple has also been developing a new Apple TV box with a faster processor for improved gaming and an upgraded remote control, however that device might not ship until next year, according to people familiar with its development. The company is working on a feature for the new remote similar to Find My iPhone that would make the TV accessory easier to find. The company’s other product in development is called AirTags, designed for locating physical items, which will be equipped with a leather carrying case, Bloomberg News has reported.

Google’s Android TV dongle could cost just $50, according to this leak - The Verge

rest.indah.link

Google’s Chromecast is a fantastic way to fling streaming video from phone to TV — but these days, you can often get a Roku Streaming Stick or Amazon Fire Stick with a dedicated remote control for the same money. But what if Google launched an Android TV dongle with its own remote control for the same $50 you’d pay for a high-end Roku or Fire stick?

That’s exactly what 9to5Google seems to have discovered, thanks to a new Home Depot leak. The home improvement story briefly listed a Google “Sabrina” for $49.99, and 9to5Google’s sources were able to provide pictures of that price tag in the Home Depot’s internal systems as well.

Sabrina, of course, would be that Android TV dongle that leaked in June, only to seemingly appear again at the FCC just last week, ahead of a rumored “summer” launch alongside the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G. Mind you, summer is now “fall” since Google already said that’s when the phones will actually come out. We can’t be 100 percent sure that Sabrina will ever truly arrive, of course, and this price could be a placeholder, but personally I’d be surprised if we go another month without the formal announcement.

Leak says a first-of-its-kind Apple device will be released alongside the iPhone 12 - BGR

rest.indah.link
  • Apple’s annual iPhone event will likely be held at the end of September or early October.
  • Aside from new iPhone 12 models with 5G support, rumor has it that Apple will finally introduce AirTags, an accessory designed to compete with Tile trackers.
  • Beyond new iPhones and the unveiling of AirTags, we can also expect Apple to release a next-gen Apple Watch later this fall.

With the coronavirus pandemic still dominating the headlines, it’s not terribly surprising that Apple’s annual iPhone media event hasn’t generated as much buzz as in years past. Though Apple hasn’t sent out official invitations just yet, rumor has it that the company will unveil the iPhone 12 — along with some other products — either in late September or early October. Apple’s iPhone events typically take place in early-mid September, but the timeline may have been moved back a bit due to coronavirus-related product delays.

While Apple’s forthcoming event will naturally be dominated by the company’s brand new iPhone lineup, that’s not to say we won’t see Apple drop a few surprises on us as well. According to a recent post from Macotakara — which tends to have a pretty solid track record with respect to Apple rumors — Apple this fall will finally introduce AirTags, a long-rumored product designed to compete with Tile trackers.

“According to Chinese supplier information,” the report reads, “Apple seems to be preparing to announce the loss prevention tag ‘Air Tag’ at the online event of iPhone 12 series.”

The accessory was initially set to be released alongside the next-gen iPhone SE earlier this year before undisclosed issues forced Apple to push back the release date by a few months.

Incidentally, rumblings regarding Apple introducing AirTags have been making the rounds for months at this point, a fact which makes the Macotakara post all the more plausible. It’s worth noting that reputed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo — who also has a stellar record with respect to Apple rumors — has previously discussed Apple releasing a Tile-inspired device tracker accessory. Further, developers over the past few months have found a few references to the product buried deep within various iOS releases.

Beyond the iPhone 12 and AirTags, the report also indicates Apple will introduce a next-gen Apple Watch this year. And given that the most recent Apple Watch release was clearly an incremental upgrade, we can only hope that we’ll see a more substantial upgrade this year.

All that said, there’s no denying that the main event at Apple’s forthcoming media event will be the company’s brand new iPhones. As we’ve covered previously, Apple’s iPhone 12 lineup is poised to be particularly ambitious, with the company set to release four distinct iPhone models, all with OLED displays and support for 5G connectivity. From what we’ve gathered thus far, Apple’s iPhone 12 lineup will consist of two Pro models with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays and lower-end devices with 6.1-inch and 5.4-inch displays.

iPhone 12 Pro to Feature 'Enhanced' Night Mode, 'Advanced' Noise Reduction, and More - PetaPixel

rest.indah.link

Apple will allegedly unveil the iPhone 12 lineup sometime in October, and according to the most recent leaks there are a lot of interesting camera improvements coming our way, especially if you go with one of the “Pro” models.

The latest leaks come from tech analyst Jon Prosser of FRONT PAGE TECH, who tweeted some screenshots that allegedly come from a PVT (product validation test) iPhone 12 Pro Max. PVT models are one of the last pre-product steps before moving into full-production, so what you see here should be almost ready for prime-time… and what we’re seeing looks very interesting.

The screenshots show several new camera features, including “Enhanced Night Mode,” “Advanced Noise Reduction,” “Enable Bit Depth Video,” “Enable Zoom Capabilities,” and “Enable LiDAR CA”… which is code for LiDAR-assisted autofocus and subject detection.

You can see the screenshots for yourself below:

As you can see from the description in the settings, “Enhanced Night Mode” will allow the phone to capture even longer stacked exposures—sort of like Google’s Astrophotography Mode—but it will only be available with a tripod or “when the device is on a steady surface.”

No details are given about Advanced Noise Reduction or Enhanced Zoom Capabilities, but the other big reveal is the addition of 4K/240p video, at least on this particular pre-production model.

Based on this and other rumors that have come out, it seems many (if not most) of the camera improvements coming to the iPhone 12 will be software-based, and probably powered by on-board AI. The ability to capture even better low-light images, the ability to capture even higher-quality 4K footage, and the (we’re speculating) ability to zoom in further by creating hand-held multi-shot images would all be welcome additions to the iPhone photography feature set.

You can dive deeper into these camera leaks and more in Prosser’s video below:

That’s all we know for now, but we expect more leaks to spring between now and the official announcement in October, so stay tuned.

Sadly, due to supply chain challenges caused by the COVID pandemic, Apple is expecting some delay in the actual shipping of the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max models. Even so, we’re hoping to have the latest iPhone “Pro” in-hand in time for the holidays, so we can see just how “advanced” and “enhanced” these new camera features really are.

Epic Games CEO Praises PUBG Mobile In Jab At Apple Over Fortnite Ban - GameSpot

rest.indah.link

Epic Games continues a legal battle with Apple over Fortnite's removal from the App Store, and CEO Tim Sweeney is having a little fun while the process plays out. The developer did the unthinkable: promoting a rival game, and all to demonstrate the value of Unreal Engine for Apple users. It looks like this battle is going to get a lot weirder before it's over. That is, if it ever does end.

On August 28, Apple seemed to take a shot at Epic Games by promoting a massive new update for PUBG Mobile on iOS. Typically, Epic Games would see PUBG Mobile as its competition, but because the game does make use of Unreal Engine--which Apple is looking to cut off from iOS and Mac developers--Sweeney promoted the game, as well.

The passive-aggressive nature of the tweet certainly isn't lost on us, because if Apple does eventually cease Unreal Engine support on its devices, that would likely mean no more PUBG Mobile. Unreal is one of the most popular engines in the world, with support on nearly every device including mobile, PC, and consoles. It's not only used on its own for games, but has been modified over the years by other studios to fit their projects. Unreal Engine 5 will be supported on next-generation systems.

Epic Games' shots at Apple have continued with its Free Fortnite campaign and tournament. It also gave away assets so players can make their own Free Fortnite merchandise, even giving permission for them to sell it. As the logo parodies one of Apple's earlier designs, it seems Epic is trying to win in the court of public opinion if it can't actually win its lawsuit.

And despite not being as successful as Fortnite, PUBG Mobile has managed to carve out a healthy niche. Its 1.0 update will include major improvements across the board, and a new competition is going to award $2 million in prizes. Unlike Fortnite, it doesn't offer cross-play with PC or console players and is technically a separate game.

The Xperia 5 II might be Sony's first phone with a 120Hz screen - Engadget

rest.indah.link
Sony Xperia 5 II leak
Android Headlines

How does Sony follow up its premium Xperia 1 II smartphone? By offering a lower-cost model that could offer some advancements of its own. Android Headlines claims to have images and specs for an Xperia 5 II that would center around a 6.1-inch, 120Hz OLED display — Sony’s first phone with a 120Hz screen. You’d have to settle for ‘just a Full HD+ resolution (read: tall 1080p), but you might prefer it over the Xperia 1 II if responsiveness matters more than 4K.

The design would mimic the Xperia 1 II by restoring the 3.5mm headphone jack absent on the original Xperia 5. Sony is apparently betting on wired audio being a selling point in an era when many manufacturers want you to be happy with Bluetooth or a dongle.

You’d otherwise get much of the same performance as the more expensive device, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. You’d have three 12MP cameras for main, ultra-wide and 3X telephoto shots, with Zeiss lenses and 4K 120FPS video recording. You’d also get a Snapdragon 865 chip, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of expandable storage and 5G support.

Despite the timing of the leak, the Xperia 5 II wouldn’t arrive at IFA. Instead, Sony is reportedly aiming for a September 17th debut. The main question is the price. It’s likely to cost less than its $1,200 counterpart, but it’s not certain by how much. That difference could be vital when 120Hz support is relatively commonplace in phones like the Galaxy S20. Sony is arriving half a year later, and might face stiff opposition when the technology is no longer a novelty.

Samsung teases premium Thom Browne Edition of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 - Engadget

rest.indah.link
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 Thom Browne edition teaser
Samsung

Samsung’s special edition Galaxy Z Flip definitely wasn’t a one-off. The tech giant has teased (via SamMobile) a Thom Browne Edition of the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 2. As you might imagine, it spices up the already premium-looking foldable phone with Browne’s signature mix of US-inspired color stripes against a gray backdrop. Even the camera module is color-matched to complete the look.

The company previously said it would follow the bundle strategy it used for Browne Edition Z Flip. You should get the phone alongside matching versions of the Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy Buds Live. You won’t risk looking gauche by picking up standard accessories.

As you might imagine, though, the combination of a fashion imprint and the extras could easily make this one of the most expensive Samsung phones to date. The Thom Browne Galaxy Z Flip cost $2,480 when new, or well over the $1,380 price of the standard Z Flip. With the Z Fold 2 likely to carry a considerably higher starting price (the original Galaxy Fold was $1,980), there’s a real chance its Browne counterpart could crack the $3,000 mark — this really will be for the wealthy and style-conscious.

Developer convinces Apple to bend App Store rules on subscriptions - AppleInsider

rest.indah.link

The developer of a firewall and VPN app has successfully managed to challenge the App Store guidelines that govern the app review process, enabling it to offer a day pass subscription that isn't typically allowed under the rules.

During WWDC, Apple revealed a major change to the review process of apps and updates being submitted to the App Store, enabling developers to challenge guidelines in cases where apps are rejected for violations. In posts made to Twitter, it seems one developer has managed to successfully take advantage of the new process.

Guardian VPN founder Will Strafach revealed on Twitter on August 14 that Apple had rejected updates to the app unless a Day Pass facility was removed. The specific rule that was being violated was 3.1.2(a), which relates to how an auto-renewing subscription must last at least seven days, far longer than the 24 hours the day pass would provide.

After challenging the update, an app update was approved for the store one day later, but the challenge was still ongoing. 9to5Mac spotted an update from Strafach on August 29, stating the guideline challenge was successful, and that the day pass would still be available to use in an upcoming version 2 update.

"I am unsure when the text of the App Store Guidelines will be publicly updated on this matter, but keep an eye out," writes Strafach. I am fairly impressed that this new ability to challenge and change App Store guidelines is genuine, and the expeditious turnaround time."

The objection by Apple was relatively late in the app's life, as it has offered a day pass feature for some time already, and was only a problem since August. The timing on August 14 coincides with Apple's objection to Epic Games' update to "Fortnite" that used direct payments instead of the App Stores in-app payment mechanism on August 13, which commenced a major legal battle between Epic and Apple

LineageOS 16.0 arrives for Pixel 2 and 2 XL, 17.1 coming soon for more Pixel phones - Android Police

rest.indah.link

It's probably been a while since most of you have even thought about the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, but LineageOS has just pushed the official version of 16.0, based on Android 9 Pie, for the duo. In addition, the Android 10-based LineageOS 17.1 is on the way for the Pixel 2, 3a, and 4 lineups.

The arrival of LineageOS now for the Pixel 2 and 2 XL is pretty timely given that official Google updates are slated to end in October of this year, so those of you still rocking the second-gen Pixel phones should be able to keep up with the latest Android features.

Only the older Pie-based 16.0 is available in stable for Pixel 2s right now, but an eagle-eyed r/LineageOS subreddit follower noticed that official LineageOS 17.1 support is coming for the Pixel 2 and 2 XL, 3a and 3a XL, as well as the 4 and 4 XL. The original Pixel and Pixel XL already had official Lineage support, and the Pixel 3 and 3 XL recently got it as well, so that leaves the brand-new Pixel 4a and currently unreleased Pixel 5 as the only Pixel phones that official Lineage support has not yet been confirmed for.

Additionally, two Moto G7-series phones, the G7 Play (channel) and G7 Power (ocean) have just received LineageOS 17.1. We'll be sure to update you guys when 17.1 arrives for those Pixels.

Epic Games Wants You To Sell Your Own "Free Fortnite" Merch - GameSpot

rest.indah.link

Epic Games' lawsuit with Apple is ongoing, with Apple recently terminating Epic's developer account on the App Store as they fight over profit cuts and Epic's decision to use an alternative payment system in Fortnite. While the case moves through the legal system, Epic is trying to get public opinion on its side with the "Free Fortnite" campaign, and it's now even letting you make your own gear--and even sell it--to show where you stand.

Via an asset pack available on the Unreal Engine site, you can design and sell shirts, stickers, and other merchandise with Epic Games' Free Fortnite logo. The logo is a parody of one of Apple's older designs, and in Epic Games' post on the subject, it appeared to put one of the stickers on a Macbook.

Epic filed a restraining order against Apple to temporarily allow it to continue using Apple's development tools for the Unreal Engine, and this was granted by a judge while its lawsuit is ongoing. However, its request to temporarily reinstate Fortnite on the App Store was not granted, and the game is still unavailable to download on iOS devices as Apple owns the only authorized digital store. It's also unavailable to download through Google Play on Android phones, but there are other storefronts on Android that offer the game.

Fortnite just began its Season 4 content, which you cannot play on iOS. If the game isn't installed on your phone already, you also cannot re-download it. For now, you'll have to use another system or console in order to get your battle royale fix.

What Is A Smart Home? - TWICE - Twice

rest.indah.link

With all the advancements in consumer electronic tech over the past five years, one of the most prolific is the smart home. Chances are, you already have one, if not several smart devices in your home already.

But what makes a smart home smart? Does everything have to be connected? At its core, “smart home” can mean any device or appliance connected to the internet that you can control using a smartphone or whose function you can automate.

It can be confusing to try and make sense of where to start and what to do with smart devices, so we’ve broken the most popular smart home devices by category to try and explain what they are and what they can do – all to help you get started on your smart home journey.

Smart Home Systems – Voice Assistants

Every smart home journey starts with choosing a voice assistant system. These are systems such as Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple Homekit (Siri). Your phone will most likely already have one installed, or can be installed. Overall, each voice assistant can control each of the devices listed below this – but always check to make sure a device is compatible with a system before you purchase.

Choosing the best smart home system can be difficult if you don’t have a preference, or a bunch of system compatible devices already, but fortunately, we’ve created a guide that can help narrow things down for you.

Click here to read How to Choose a Smart Home System

Smart Speakers

Smart speakers are a great place to start your smart home, and in the case of Amazon – quite affordable. Amazon frequently puts their smart speakers, the Dot and the Echo, on sale. Google’s Nest Mini is comparable to the Dot, and you can find it on sale throughout the year or bundled with software services for cheap. The Apple Homekit is a bit more, so we recommend starting with Alexa or Google if you are on a budget.

Smart Lights

Once you have your smart home voice assistant chosen and you have a compatible input device, like an Amazon Echo, it’s time to expand your smart home! Smart Lights are one of the easiest and most convenient smart home upgrades you can choose. Philips Hue bulbs are a great starting point, allowing you to control brightness, turn individual bulbs off or on and, if you spring for the Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance starter kit, you can change and assign over 16 million Colors and shades of White to your bulbs. The only minus to these excellent smart light bulbs is you have to use a proprietary hub – which is included in the starter kit, or that can be purchased separately. Some smart home owners like to use Wi-Fi enabled light bulbs. These bulbs can be controlled through your home’s Wi-Fi network, eliminating the need for a specialized hub and app.

Smart Plugs

Smart plugs allow you to control power from an outlet to an electrical device. Smart plugs are great to use with lamps, televisions and other electronics that you would normally turn off and on with a switch. You can find smart plugs ranging from affordable prices with fewer features to pricey multi-featured plugs that can be scheduled to turn off and on automatically at certain times.

Smart Locks

Smart locks are a step up in difficulty for set up, but they are a great beginning smart home device. Not only do they secure your door, the best smart locks have Bluetooth compatibility, allowing you to open your door lock without having to dig in your pocket for your keys – a godsend for people with arms full of groceries or other things. Additionally, smart locks give you the convenience of locking/unlocking your door from anywhere in the home where your voice assistant can hear you. Some smart locks also have home security compatibility, becoming part of your home security monitoring system.

Home Security Cameras

Speaking of home security, another great smart home security device are home security cameras. These devices range in quality and price, and our smart home experts give their recommendations here. Security cameras help protect your property by recording and allowing you to see who or what was in the vicinity of your home – all from your mobile device. Some home security cameras integrate into a wider home security system, giving you more peace of mind as they monitor your home. Pricing can be quite expensive for home security cameras, especially if you add in a monitoring service.

Smart Home Hubs

Smart home hubs are more than a beefy smart speaker, they provide a uniform platform that allows you to control multiple smart home devices that might not communicate with each other without one. Smart home hubs also let you automate a lot of processes, like creating an action that locks your front door, turns off the living room lights while turning on the bedroom lights and closing the blinds when you’re ready for bed. As smart devices continue to improve, smart speakers like the Amazon Echo are becoming more like hubs, making it more affordable with their capabilities.

Smart Thermostats

Who touched the thermostat? Not a problem when you can control and monitor your home’s temperature from your mobile device. The best smart thermostats work with your HVAC system seamlessly while providing you more control over your home’s internal comfort level. When integrated with other smart home devices, such as smart plugs, motion sensors and lighting, smart thermostats can help your HVAC system run smoother and more efficiently, saving you money.

Smart Light Switches

Forgot to turn off the light downstairs? If you have a smart switch installed, you should be able to control it from anywhere in your home, and depending on your system, anywhere you have internet access. Smart light switches are another smart home device that is a step up on the installation difficulty scale, but once you install them, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it earlier. Control of lights in your home, not just bulbs, can help save energy and make it more convenient as you integrate them with voice controls or actions. If you have an older home, be sure to consult with an electrician to make sure your home can handle the newer devices, as they most often have to be hardwired. If you don’t want to mess with installation, you can still control your lighting with smart bulbs.

Video Doorbells

Along with smart locks, video doorbells are a great home security upgrade for smart homes. Video doorbells alert you and allow you to see who is at the door on your smartphone, even when you’re not at home. This is helpful, even when you are home, as you can see your kids coming in through the door, or when FedEx, UPS or the postal service drops off packages. Some video doorbells can function as security cameras, although they are most likely not to be as good as a dedicated home security camera. Video doorbells range in installation difficulty, but most don’t require any hardwiring, opting instead for mounting systems that can be quickly installed on your door frame.

Smart Smoke Detectors

Not just a fancy screaming siren, a connected smoke detector can alert your smartphone, wherever you are. Additionally, the best smart smoke detectors automatically turn on smart lights, making it easier to exit more safely.

Robot Vacuum

Evolving beyond the simple robot vacuums of the early 2000s, more and more robot vacuums are utilizing smart home controls to give you more control over the cleaning schedules and zones than before. These little bots are great at helping maintain the cleanliness of your floors and are great for keeping pet hair on the floor under control too.

Garage Door Openers

How can a garage door be smart? It turns out if you have the right model and corresponding app, even your garage door can gain some intelligence. Being alerted or able to control your garage door from remote locations, or from home can come in handy more than you think, especially if someone manages to open your door while you aren’t home. Additionally, some models can also connect with your lights and smart cameras, allowing you to set them to activate when the door opens – a great way to not have to fumble in the dark for a light switch.

Smart homes aren’t just the future, they are the present. With hundreds of new devices releasing each year and thousands of devices already on the market, starting your smart home journey is easier than ever. Auto show plans highlight need to defeat virus - Automotive News

rest.indah.link

Three nations. Three auto shows. Three different plans that illustrate the challenge of finding the right balance between putting on an effective show and protecting people from COVID-19 exposure.

  • The Beijing show is set to begin in September — after being postponed from April by the outbreak. Safety protocols are promised, though it's unclear whether there will be capacity limits. China, where coronavirus infections were first reported, enacted strict measures to contain the spread. While reports from the government-controlled media on how well the virus has been managed should be considered with a dose of healthy skepticism, that delayed show is ready to go on.
  • The start of the Washington Auto Show has been pushed from January to early April next year, with the goal of ensuring attendees' safety. Planners outlined safety protocols that will be in place, but it's far from assured that the virus will be sufficiently contained by then or that a vaccine will be available to protect attendees (and everyone else in America). The Washington-Maryland-Virginia region has endured more than 6,800 deaths and 234,000 positive tests for infection as of last week.
  • Meanwhile, organizers of Toronto's Canadian International AutoShow, scheduled for February, are considering whether to go fully virtual. Canada has largely flattened the curve using strict measures after major spikes in Ontario and Quebec, but its provinces are on guard against a second wave. The decision "has to be based on what is right for the public and what is right for the industry," said show General Manager Jason Campbell.

The examples of these three events demonstrate the clear linkage between squelching the virus and economic recovery.

Automakers and dealers want to have public shows when they can, because it's a great way to connect with consumers. But for reveals, automakers clearly have digital options.

The Los Angeles show is still officially on the calendar in November — whether it stays there remains to be seen. What's at stake now is whether people can stop spreading the virus or the pharmaceutical industry can come up with a vaccine in time for the New York and Detroit shows next spring.

The best outdoor smart home products to buy in summer 2020 - CNET

rest.indah.link

The phrase "smart home" usually conjures images of devices that go inside a home -- an Alexa smart speaker, a Nest thermostat, a Samsung refrigerator. But more and more we're seeing products and even apps that help beyond your front door. You can use a lot of this tech year-round, like a doorbell or an LED spotlight or outdoor speakers. Others are seasonal.

Let's take a look at seven categories of the best outdoor smart devices you can buy this summer.

Rachio

Smart gardening used to be focused on standalone plant sensors. Buy a Parrot Flower Power or an Oso Technologies PlantLink, stick it in a pot -- or directly in your yard -- and wait for it to tell you when to water your plant. These small devices were fairly limited, especially for folks interested in monitoring larger gardens.

Enter: Connected irrigation systems. From Rachio's latest smart sprinkler set up to CNET's homemade drip irrigation system, which we've used in the past to grow lettuce, jalapenos and Carolina Reapers, these systems help you track a larger space remotely. 6 reasons you need a smart sprinkler.

Outdoor camera smart home devices aren't new, but the variety of outdoor security camera options have increased a ton in recent years. Where it was once limited to a standard camera, we're now seeing smart security camera options built in to outdoor light fixtures, motion sensor smart doorbells and even battery-powered smart security camera options.

We're most excited about the new LTE cameras that work over a cellular network, which effectively monitor garden pests outside Wi-Fi range. The best outdoor security cameras of 2020.

Extend your Wi-Fi range

Netgear Orbi Outdoor

Chris Monroe/CNET

A wireless access point, also called an extender, is a great way to get your Wi-Fi network outside, if you don't want an LTE camera or simply want to get internet out in the garden.

An outdoor extender, like the Netgear Orbi Outdoor, can easily handle this. Read our in-depth look at how to cover your yard in Wi-Fi here and more about Wi-Fi extenders we like. Read our Netgear Orbi Outdoor review.

We've covered indoor lighting extensively, but smart outdoor lighting is a relatively new space. Sure, you can control an outdoor light with an indoor wired Lutron switch, but what about smart LEDs that combat the elements?

There's good news on the smart light front: companies are beginning to introduce more outdoor smart light LEDs and fixtures, including this Ring outdoor light.  The best smart lights of 2020.

Colin West McDonald/CNET

Yes, a garage isn't technically "outside," but it covers that space between your driveway and your home. For a lot of us, it's where we store the lawn mower and the garden tools. Smart garage door openers let you open and close your garage using an app or a voice command. This smart home device can even send reminders to your phone to let you know when you've left the door open. The best smart garage door controllers for 2020.

Weather-tracking tech

BloomSky Sky2

Tyler Lizenby/CNET

You can track the weather in your area with a quick Google search any time, but smart weather stations are more customized. The BloomSky Sky2 Weather Camera Station tracks temperature, wind speed, rain and air pressure right in your backyard. Whether you're a weather geek or want to monitor the latest forecast to determine when best to plant, water and harvest plants in your garden, device options like this might be a smart investment. Read our BloomSky Sky2 review.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Whether you're working in the yard or enjoying an evening cocktail on the porch, waterproof Bluetooth speakers bring your favorite music or podcasts to you.

We especially like the affordable Tribit MaxSound Plus. This $56 battery-powered speaker is supposed to last for up to 20 hours on a single charge. And, bonus, this smart device can survive rain storms and splashes from the pool because it's waterproof. Read our Tribit MaxSound Plus review.
